I have a small 8-watt return pump (Sicce Syncra Silent 0.5) that uses AC power. Would the pump be compatible with an APC UPS (e.g., the APS UPS 1000VA)? I need to find a backup battery that will run the pump for at least a few hours if the power goes out.

Yes, you can run anything with an APC UPS. DC pumps (like the Sicce SDC) will draw less power, though (they have an AC-DC adapter) - and you'll get significantly more battery life. Most of the time people just run the wavemakers (only) off a battery - as most draw <10 watts and you can get a full day.
