Hey tang people. Got offered a deal on a 4 year old purple tang by someone who had the tang since it was little and was raised in their aquarium. They are offering 350 for it, I know they run 400-500. Is this a good deal? Also seems like a lot of money to spend on a fish… but they are beautiful. Is it worth it?

I don't believe they run 400-500. The captive ones do but not the wilds, 400-500 gets you a gem tang. NY Aquatic has specials on purples for $150 now and again.

It may be worth it because it has been in someone's tank for awhile but why are they rehoming? Purples are aggressive and they could be selling because it is beating the crap out of other fish or are they dismantling the tank? Obviously $350 would be a lot to pay for a fish that is going to come beat your fish up.

Anywho, $350 is high for a purple so it really just depends if you want a fish that has been healthy and been around for awhile and willing to pay extra for that.

They are selling cause they are getting out of the hobby. Its in a tank with a bistletooth and is reported to be very shy, which seems to be the case in the multiple videos they have sent. And I looked on blue zoo and liveaquaria and thats the prices I was seeing.. inflation most like, but if this is high for one then Ill look elsewere!

Blue zoo and LA are not appropriate prices. LA especially. Saltwater Aquarium has them for $280 and NY Aquatic had them for $99 and $130 a few months back. Quarantined ones from Dr Reef are $300 and conditioned are $200.

Absolutely not. They run about $200 here and about the same on Reef beauties and reef exclusive

Ah gotcha. So this is high for a purple tang?

Yes, LA prices are super inflated, just ignore everything on there. Never use them for price of anything.

Try offering him $250 maybe?

Granted I bought mine probably 8 years ago and it was $120 on sale from $180. Gizmo is a nut job but he doesn't really bother anyone. Let's just say a local shop is usually one of the most expensive in the country and they have some for $270 4.25-5.25 (although 7-9" is $660) and even LiveAquaria is $261. I bought a couple fish off reefs4less today and same size tang is $315
