I have a 6 month old cannon macro lens that wont adjust in manual or automatic. Any ideas on why it broke? It's not like i use it all that much and its stored in the padded case all the time. it worked the last time i put it away and now nada.

What do you mean "won't adjust"? Will it not focus, will not change aperture, can you share precisely what it is not doing?

It wouldn't focus. I actually smacked the side of lens with my hand and now its working normal.

That sounds a little scary. They are pretty expensive....

Sounds worth having it checked out. Does it make any sounds now as you go thru the adjustments?????

No noise at all, its working just like it always had. It seems like the mechanism that makes the lens focus when you turn the grip was not engaged for some reason. I had to squeeze the grip pretty hard and was able to get it to move a very little bit after ten full turns of the grip. Then i put it in auto mode to let the camera do the focusing and it started to work, but only a little. Thats when i gave it the palm and its been working proper ever since.

I would send that in then! The "unga bunga" fix method is never a good place to be with delicate optics.

My guess is the mechanism is caught somewhere between manual and AF, keeping it from functioning properly in either. I agree with above, banging on optics scares me. I personally use a Quantaray 28-90 mm lens on a Canon body without any problems ever.

Over the last several years both canon and nikon (and everyone else really) have released bodies and lenses with bad batches that have been recalled.

I would contact Canon directly before sending it in. They can reference your serial number on the lens and see if it fell into any of those problem areas.

Once you have cleared that out of the equation, proceed taking it to a local CERTIFIED repair center.

Most areas have a somewhat local repair center. However, check your warranty and follow it closely.

Also not sure what the piece is called, but your eye piece may be messed up and making it looked unfocused..

Naw it was definately the lens. When you spun the grip the dial indicator stayed on about the 3 foot mark. It's working now, but i sent in an email to cannon. Thanks for the help all.
