I stopped into the local Petco this morning to check out their 50 percent off sale. While there I wandered over to look at the fish. I found this little guy. I know the stigma behind Petco fish… I believe this is a black storm clownfish. I asked the worker and he said it was 49.99 and he’s been there for a while. I really like the markings of this little guy. Would it be worth QT while I get my tank up running and cycled or skip and pay the extra to go through a Lfs or online shop once I’m ready to add fish in a month or so? IMG_5792.jpeg IMG_5795.jpeg

1. He looks more like a really low grade Davinci clown
2. Since he’s been there a while, you can probably get away with asking the aquatic specialist to bring the price down
3. Depending on the other fish in the entire tower, I’d say it’s worth it. Petco runs their systems on one system/sump for every 1-2 towers

I Really want to pull the trigger but my DT isn’t even up yet. I would mood to figure out a small, basic tank for the time being… any advice?

Sorry I did not catch the part about your tank not being up. I would wait and get your tank up and running. My local petco gets pretty awesome looking clowns in fairly often. They are sold as premium clown but often look like storms or picassos. SO I bet there will be others coming through.

How long until the DT is up? If it's less than a month, and you like this guy go for it. Set up a smal QT as you mentioned.

I bought both of mine a year ago at petco and they are both doing great.

I set up a new QT system whenever I get new fish using a 10 gallon tank, some PVC pieces, an air driven sponge filter, and a bottle of fritz turbo start or instant ocean bio-spira. These bottled bacteria work well enough to add the fish the same day.
If you have any sort of stuff like that you can keep a single clown in there for as long as you need before your DT is ready.
Another consideration though, is that if you ever want to have a pair of clowns you should wait and get them both at the same time.

At minimum it will be a month. I’m setting up my old 13.5 Fluval.

I really want to take my time with this tank and go very slowly setting it back up. Gathering all of the equipment now and purchasing some upgrades.

I was thinking about a rimless cube if there was an AIO drop in for them. I’ve been out of the hobby for a bit. There is a lot of new stuff out there!

There is such a stigma around Petco fish and I understand it but I also think it really depends on the store and honestly some common sense. If it looks and feels wrong it probably is. The whole “if it walks like a duck and sounds like a duck, it’s a duck” mentality.

Is that all you do and monitor or are you still using copper as well?

Yeah I have coral and fish from petco and they had a couple bristle worms but that was all. You’re absolutely right though it all just depends on who runs your fish section of your petco and what store it is. Mine are both fantastic.

I think you have answered your own question here. "I really want to take my time with this tank and go very slowly"

So go slowly

My first 3 first (Royal gramma and 2x clowns), were Petco fish. No QT and dropped them right into the tank (including water from bag). Was this “smart” - not really given what I know now about fish diseases. However they are alive and kicking 2 years later and didn’t bring home any diseases. There are a dozen other healthy fish in the tank with them too.

I have since adjusted my reckless habits and only buy QT fish (and not dump the bag in :) ). But overall Petco experience and prices were great

The vast majority of my fish I bought from Petco. Honestly I prefer to buy from online Petco so you get the guarantee that they don't give on store bought. Petco may not be the best but they are still good.
