Overflow Help

I recently bought a returned custom planet 60g at a really good deal. The only issue is it has two 1in bulkheads drilled, one for the overflow and one for the return.

It came with this slip on strainer similar to this

I am concerned it is going to be really loud with this setup. Is there anything I can do to quiet the noise outside of getting a custom overflow box built? I have reached out to a few people for a custom overflow box, so please also let me know if you know of anyone building them.

Wow that’s just really strange that someone would have a tank set up in that manner because as you’ve stated yes it’s going to be loud with one drain. If you have somebody that can drill an additional hole and fit an overflow box it would get a lot more flow and be silent if you ran a herbie style drain.

Take it to a glass shop and have them lay an external overflow template (whatever non custom box you choose) over the hole closest to the center and have them drill it.

I suggest a bean animal 3 drain.

Use the 3rd hole for return or drill a 4th and use dual returns.

Appreciate the replies, I was hoping I wouldn't have to get another hole drilled. The only issue is the second hole that is currently for the return is pretty close. I would need to make sure the box would fit.

Would a custom box for the current hole not suffice? I understand having two drains for redundancy and so it doesn't overflow.

Personally I would use them both as drains and the return over the side.
1 with an elbow facing down the other will be your emergency. Strainers on both.
Gate valve on the main. Herbie anyone?

that's what I am thinking now that I have removed the bulk heads. I can try getting a box made for these two holes. This is the first time I've plumbed a sump, do you have a picture of what you are describing? Thanks!

that's what I am thinking now that I have removed the bulk heads. I can try getting a box made for these two holes. This is the first time I've plumbed a sump, do you have a picture of what you are describing? Thanks!

Since it's not a huge tank, I'd be inclined to hook up something like an FX6 canister to it. Run 2 90deg elbows on the back down to the canister (1 return, 1 drain). On the inside, run a 90deg elbow for the drain side with a little run of pipe to make sure it's sucking comfortably from below the waterline, put your strainer on there. Then the return as you see fit.

I'm trying to run a sump with this setup, so the fx6 will not be an option

I used this on my display fuge that is fed from my main return, and returns back to my sump. I can attest that it is NOT quiet. However, I find the sound of water flowing to be relaxing, provided it is not obnoxiously loud. So, to each their own.

to give everyone an update, I reached out to several people about a custom overflow box build. Modular Marine came through!

I traced out my holes and sent over the measurements to him. Turns out I have 3/4 in bulkheads lol. Definitely learning a lot of plumbing with this first plumbed sump build. He will take the 1200 model and modify it to fit 3/4 bulkheads. Just waiting for order confirmation now. Thank you for the help everyone!
