Hello all,

This morning I woke up to my clownfish missing part of his tail fin and breathing heavy. Last night he was fine.
My tank is new, only about 3 weeks now, and still going through nitrogen cycle. Only other fish in the tank is a fire fish and the clown is the aggressor of the 2 so I doubt the fire fish was the culprit.
Ammonia is about .5ppm
Nitrite 1ppm
Nitrate 10 ppm

Can my parameters have caused it or a disease? Should I run carbon?
Thoughts, ideas,? I rather not lose this guy.

Thank you

Is there a powerhead for the fish to have got caught in? That looks like mechanical damage on the tail (doesn’t seem like a firefish could do it) which can heal. Is the paleness on the tail a raised area or does it look more like damage?
I’d be more concerned about the large amounts of mucus on the face/body which suggests brooklynella. All fish should be moved into a treatment tank and treated with formalin.

Did you say you see mucus?

How big is your tank? Using fish to cycle a tank is not suggested, its easy to buy bottled bacteria and cycle the tank without hurting any fish. Flow in an aquarium is very important, stagnant water is death to animals. You should look into what kind of powerhead is best suited for your tank. To start with.........

Maybe a pic a of your tank will help get some suggestions for you to help build a great environment for your fish.

Between the first 2 white bars there is mucus buildup. Looks like there is a brook infection and also a secondary bacterial issue which would have resulted in the tail getting destroyed (with nothing to do any real damage it must be due to infection).

Really tough to say what would have caused that tail damage overnight if the only other fish is a firefish.

As a side note - if your tank pH is above 8, a 0.50 ppm ammonia reading is fairly toxic to fish.

I have a fluval evo 13.5 with a sicce 1.0 powerhead. The flow seems pretty strong. I also used live sand and a bottle of fritzZyme 9.

Thanks for pointing out the mucus. I honestly had no idea.
