I have had a D40x for about 18 months now and I am starting to do some research on getting a new body (maybe).

What are you guys shooting? What are the benefits/drawbacks?

I am looking at a new D90 or a barely used D200.

Like I said, I am just staring this process. I just want to know what some of the other Nikon users are shooting with.

Thanks

I'm shooting with a D80.

One of the features I use alot when shooting in Manual that I noticed the equivelent cannon at the time didn't have was spot metering. This was only one of my reasons for going Nikon, but I assume a feature the D40 probably doesn't have that and it might be helpful to you.

The d40x has a spot feature, but the d40 doesn't. I shoot 90% in full manual.

Greg, That is one of the reasons I am thinking of upgrading. I would love to be able to throw the 105 on and take an HD video. :)

That will be sweet. I myself cannot wait to get the Canon 5D Mark II for the same reason. Unfortunately, my wallet is perfectly fine with waiting.

Yep, I can sell a couple pieces to help offset getting a D90, but I would need to sell a car to offset a 5D. That is the main reason why I have already ruled out a D300 and I am really leaning towards the 90.

Mark, I know the D200 used to me mine via Doug (fishnfst). Hopefully he doesn't see this, but I would recommend the D90 over the D200 personally if I had a choice. The D90 uses the same sensor as the D300 so it has better high ISO performance which is really important in shooting our tanks. Doug recently got a D3 and wants to sell the D200 to get a D300 as a back up. haha

Thanks Ian, The thing about it is that I have seen a couple D200's lately.

Thanks for the sensor info. That is the kind of info and feedback I need :)

I use the D70s. I've never thought about upgrading the body....focused more on glass and lighting at the moment.

D90 all the way. I had a D40, then bought a D80, and then bought a D300 in a time frame of about 8 months....talk about expensive learning experience.

For this hobby, ISO is extremely important. The CMOS sensor is HIGHLY superior, and my direct comparison is this.

The Noise level at ISO 1200 on the D300 (same sensor, so good for comparison) is about the same "noise" as the D80 at anything over 200...

Its that big of an improvement.

A D90 and the Nikon 105 is one amazing combo...youll never regret it.

If i remember, lol, when im shooting on a tripod, i generally shoot at ISO 200, but im going to start shoot (low 1?) whatever the term the camera calls the equivalent to ISO 100.

If im shooting hand held, usually 800, on top downs sometimes as high as 1600.

I tend to have a particular F-stop in mind, so ill set that. Then move the ISO as needed to get a manageable shutter speed.

ive gotten kinda lazy lately, not really producing what i consider to be great pics.

I need to do what Gary is doing, and go around to other reefers houses and shoot their established reef tanks. With my only tanks being function, not display at the moment, i really am getting bored with it.
