So I received alot of coral frags yesterday most of them being zoas. most of them have opened up polyps but a couple of them have stayed totally shut any idea why or what's wrong?
Also how do you know when a zoa is dead?
Regarding the zoa frags there all on these horrible square frag holders which I think are unsightly. But been a newbie is it still best way is just to glue the square frag to wherei water it on the rock in hope eventually it will be covered?
How long does it take for zoas to produce new polyps?
Also I have new electric blue, bali and left handed hermits and they are all over the frags and on top of the zoas will they damage them at all? I'm assuming one of the reasons is on some of the frag squares they are covered in bits of algae which I think is what they are after been there is no algae in my tank anywhere as its a new tank.

I've attached couple of the photos of some and you can see the ones that I said have not opened at all.

Just give them time to acclimate for a few days-weeks. I had a colony that took 3 weeks to finally open up and start growing when I first got them.

Many zoas have different growth rates. It can be weeks or months for them to start producing more polyps. When zoas die they will start melting away. They will grow over and cover the frag plugs they are on eventually. Your hermits shouldnt hurt the zoas, they are just cleaning up the algae on the plugs. My hermits crawl over mine all the time.

I'd be careful when handling zoas, palythoas which look very similar have a very potent toxin they can release.

Good luck on your reefing journey!

how do you know if the placement is good or bad as in too much light or not enough?
should zoas be open 24hours a day?how do you identify what types of zoas they are what colour types etc?

Zoas dont need much light. I keep might pretty low in my tank. Do you have a picture of where they are at in your tank depth-wise?

As for staying open most of mine close at night but a few will stay open for most of the night. And for zoa ID there so many names now its hard to get a sure answer. You can post pictures into the zoa discussion and others might be able to help you get a good idea of what you have.
