Hey everyone,
Glad to join this community of reefers! I'll just tell whoever is interested how I got into this hobby, where I'm at now, and some thoughts I've had.
I got into this hobby from a 5-minute BRS video that said the hobby was "easier than ever" to get into, which I think is true, but it led to me binge spending on a bunch of basic equipment (29 gallon tank combo kit, heater, etc.) knowing next to nothing. I think retrospectively if I had planned a little more, I could have got better/more appropriate equipment for less or the same amount of money, but if that were the case my wife may not have fully approved so either way I am here and in the hobby!
The more I've gotten into it, I think this is such a cool and fun hobby. My original goal was to just have a pair of clownfish, but not I'm thinking it would also be nice to have some soft corals. My current plan is to buy some cheap lighting (NICREW 24W) and a cheap powerhead (IM wavelink DC wavemaker), add some coralline algae and hope it takes, then move to corals.
Currently my stock is as follows:
- 2 clownfish
- 1 Nessarius snail
- 2 small hermit crabs
- 1 Halloween hermit crab
- 5 Trochus snails
I feed a small piece of mysis shrimp every evening and dry pellets a few times a week.
I have an aqueon smartclean power filter, so probably not the best filtration system, and it's crossed my mind if I would need to upgrade this to a bigger system that can take media, chaeto, etc. A sump isn't something I can invest in right now.
Right now my only issue is my water appears cloudy, but I can't afford a UV sterilizer, and since my parameters seem okay, I guess it's fine?
Another thing that's happening for us down the road is we're moving into a major city next summer, so I'll have to see how people have moved with aquariums, and kept reef tanks in an urban setting.
