I’m excited to be upgrading from my 40 gal to a 100ish gallon and have been looking at my options, the 40 gal is an aio by innovative marine so i’ll be switching to a sump which i’m very excited for, I was looking at the IM 100 gal exterior over flow complete reef system, seems really simple to set up and comes with all the basics. OR the red sea reefer max 425 G2+(114 gal). looking for something obviously reliable but also easy enough to get the hang of. please let me know your thoughts and I am open to other suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

The only difference is internal overflow the tank can get 1-3” closer to a wall. But the over flow takes up space inside the tank and you have to scape around and always see it

External overflow is virtually invisible in the tank but tank needs to be about 3” from the wall for plumbing

You should consider this:

The ext overflow box I believe is 2.5”. That’s the min distance from the wall. Not that big off a deal to me to have a real clean looking inside without obstructions

1600 shipped - tank, stand, cabinet, sump, ato, plumbing

80g display
48x20x20
Low iron glass on 3 sides rear painted black

Ext ghost overflow

26g custom sump
9g custom ato

Handmade stand by a cabinet maker/shop in cali. Marine grade plywood skinned in waterproof laminate - inside and out

4 vertical load bearing support braces in the cabinet design

Precut plumbing kit

@JoJosReef bought one and is having a small modification done for a refugium. Just needs one baffle added

I’m using an algae turf scrubber instead of a refugium

I worked with current USA owner to modify the plumbing setup and brought this to the forum community. Details are in my thread here. Buy one while it’s still available. Only 12 left I think then the deal is gone forever. It’s a 3k setup

You can get your own skimmer, freedom to choose your own.

I think post 19 I gave the purchase link. The Etsy account is owned by current USA. You are buying direct from them and it ships direct from their California warehouse

Here is my skimmer in the middle section. Plenty of space leftover for live rock, scrubber, or a refugium

The sump is custom designed for the cabinet opening. It couldn’t be longer due to the (important) vertical braces, so they made the sump very deep. Almost full depth of the tank

this is all incredibly tempting, is it 80 gal total or 80 gal display? I just want something big enough to have a yellow eye kole tang, yellow or gem tang and a foxface. i don’t care if those are the only 3 fish in the tank but I want those and I want them to be happy, I think they can be happy in 100+ at least when they’re smaller. do you think the 80 gal would be too small?

It’s true 80g display (I double checked) and a 26g sump and a 9g ato.

Yellow eye kole tang is 70g min - no prob

Gem tang - these are aggressive and sensitive fish. Min tank size is 180g. - no

Fox face is 70g min - no prob

Yellow tang - this is 125g min but I have heard of people having them in 75g tanks. The only place to get them is biota captive bred and they sell them at 1.25” as babies. You could have one for a while in here and it might do fine as an adult. Probably would have a good chance of being ok since it would spend its whole life in here and be used to it. But really depends on the personality of the fish and the other livestock you add Regardless you could have one at least for a few years at the worst case scenario.

You could do any of the bristle tooth tangs - a tomini would be an excellent choice

You could get several other fish in addition to the ones above, wrasses and firefish, a clownfish. You have a lot of options in this tank. Just limited by a fishes adult size and personality and a lot of tangs do get large and require a 6 foot tank as adults. But you do have several options for tangs still

so could a kole tang, yellow tang, fox face, and (maybe, pleaseee) a tiny blue hippo fit happily in that 80 gal? had a quarter sized one when i first got in the hobby till i was informed they need more room and gave it to someone with a 200 gallon. loved that fish, she was the queen of the tank.

Lol pushing it with the hippo but yes you could keep it in juvenile portion of life. I believe hothouse guys get almost 18” and need a 180g full grown

It really is a good deal. If I didn't already have a 75, and if they had not somehow found a stack of photos of basement paneling from the 70's, and used that as the basis for their laminate, I would have bought this. Like you tangs are on my list, along with small angel(s) so I need a larger tank.

this is basically the only thing i’m concerned about because this deal is amazing “so i need a larger tank” i’ll be so annoyed if im kicking myself in a year because i didn’t just go for a 100-125, ya know?

fox face not in a 80....100+
Yellow tang ...no....90+
low key i feel like 20 more gallons and 10 more gallons is not gonna make much of a difference in their mood when they wake up in the morning, especially when they’re smaller.
