Hi all Thought I would start off a tank build for a fish only to document the build and get some help and advice from the professionals :)

Ok so some years ago i built myself a 2000mm a 1000mm x 800mm fish only system and I loved it. kids, time, money and damp forced me to shut this down.

Lock down came and I got bored wanted to try build a drop off reef tank .. the drop off part was for my son so he could enjoy the fish at eye level

I've enjoyed this tank it’s had its ups and downs and 2 big wipe outs from power issues..

Fast forward to today all been well we have a new house to in around 4 months so plenty of time to plan !!

The tank will be more than 2000ltrs but other than that I don't know lol

The tank will be housed in a garage that's attached to the house.. the room I have to play with is 2.39m wide and 4.17 long

Glass I’d like to stick to 15mm so that's going to restrict max high.. I need to check with work " we use glass" but think the max length we can get is 3m long

Frame will be made from steel.. i do have access to the 80x40 aluminium frames you see a lot of tanks on these days but since I use it at work, I'm shocked they hold the weight of tanks ! so may just go steel work.

Frame & tank will be cladded or maybe enclosed as i want the garage "man cave" to look as good as the other rooms in the house.

There is a 2nd garaged attached but much smaller i did think about having filtration in there but I may have to go with traditional sumps!

issues .. with the drop off tank I've had issue with algae and browning of the water mainly due to the heavy bio load this MUST improve for this tank

Questions ..

How am I going to deal with the heavy bio load and 2000+ltr of water ( huge racked sump with algae maybe )

Lighting .. thinking of going down the old school MH lights .. we have huge solar set up and the tax man will help with the Elec bill :) not sure what cheap led are out there for a fish only

Flow I am thinking old school again I've been looking on here and these used closed loop for flow but may need some help designing

I currently have

1 x reeflow hammerhead/barracuda
1 x reeflow dart water
1 X MP40
2 X large vortech L2 pumps

Skimmers

2 x skimz monzter SM253 rated at 3000ltr each

This is what I’m thinking

Maybe feed a little less but more often so it’s not going all over then if nitrates and po4 are to hight dose voda or get a pellet reactor to help.
lanthium chloride dosing Is good for po4

Got some quotes back

Length 79 x Height 32 x Width 60" £2,332.50 15mm

Length 79 x Height 28 x Width 60" £1,250.00 12mm

They didn't qoute on 19mm so assume they can't do it

NO! Height is always something that causes more of a headache than needed. Shallow tanks are much easier to get your hands into, and 28 is already quite tall.
I'm starting to agree just down to cost I guess

Picked up another skimmer which should be able to cope with the bio load deltec ap1006

Well just about settled in the new house having a measure up the tank wasn’t going to fit!

The tank

So, the new plan new tank is .. 3000m x 1000 x 850 high in 15mm glass this maybe more suited size with it been a fish only more room to swim !

Ive attached some pictures

The left-hand side will have a 600mm x 50mm cut out dropping down to 3 x 40mm drain lines which I assume will be ample for the return over but was a bit of a guess so if you think I should add a 4th etc let me know

Returns pump

I have the Vectra L2 Mobius Ready DC Pump

Specifications

Max Flow: 3100 GPH (11,500 lph)

Max Head Height: 21.5 Feet

Footprint: 5 in. x 8.5 in. (126.8mm x 215.15mm)

Input Fitting*: 1.5" (38mm)

Output Fitting*: 1.25" (31.75mm)

Power Supply: 150W

I will be aiming for around 15,000ltr between the 2 pumps any improvements or thoughts here ?

The return water will go down into the sump ( SUMP 1 ) below which I’m thinking of been 2000mm x 900mm x 400mm in 10mm glass and just simply having this led lit with algae to help take care of the huge bio load and high p04 (not sure how well this will work )

Id then like to put and insulates sump outside ( SUMP 2 ) something around 1200m 600 x 400mm in this I can house any reactors needed and feed the skimmer “ the beast “ it’s a Deltec AP1006 and needs to be fed with 3000ltr of water per hour the sump will need to be higher than the sumps under the tank to slow back into the algae bed before returning to the display

Scape

Will be quite open ive picked up 350kg of old dry live rock was about 10 years out of the tank and looks very good stuff.. will need soak and wash in Ro and seed tis with some quality live rock which I will look out for

Ro ive picked up a 500 gal unit with new membrane but the stand is a bit rusty etc

Heating & cooling

I have a Teco TC60 which come of a 4500ltr tank assuming this will be linked into sump 1 or 2

Lighting

not decided yet but its either the evergrow im using now or 8 of the 120w cheap black box units

Flow

I Currently have

1 x reeflow hammerhead/barracuda

1 x reeflow dart water

1 X MP40

And 5 TMC huge closed loop pump .. I need to work the flow out but these are all quoted in M3 not ltrs lol

along the back brace I intend to have bulk head for the ins and out of the pumps

Electrics

The system will be split into 2 circuits sharing the equipment’s across

C1

Led 120w led ights x 5

Return pump L2 Max flow prob ran at 50%

Heater 600 4 2400 Used if chiller fails (so not on in normal use)

TMC Flow 720 1 720 run 24/7 22 amp

TMC Flow 720 1 720 run 24/7

Skimmer 6 65 390 run 24/7

Algae light

C2

led 120w led lights x 5

Return pump L2 Max flow prob ran at 50%

Chiller Heater 3000W used a primary heating cooling should this fail C1 will kick in

TMC Flow 720 1 720 run 24/7 24/7

Algae light

Any thoughts or improvements for me
