I know this topic is discussed a lot but I really need advice on my last fish. My tank is a 55 gallon acrylic 48" long reef.
Current stock:
Starry Blenny
Royal Gramma
Blue Star Leopard Wrasse
Yellow Coris Wrasse
Neon Goby
Wheelers Goby/ Pistol Pair
Black Ice Snowflake Clownfish
Skunk Cleaner Shrimp
Fire Shrimp

I really want a blue fish but choices are limited by the size of my tank and that I have corals.
Fish I am considering:
Flameback Angel - I know can be hit or miss with coral nipping
Springers Damsel
Azure Damsel
Pavo Damsel

My tank is very harmonious now and I am afraid of unleashing holy terror. Which of these fish would be the safest option? My LFS has a beautiful captive breed Flameback Angelfish in a tank with coral and small fish. It seems very peaceful but I worry that will change as the fish matures.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Blue chromis of course! Surprised it didn’t make your list as its probably the most common small blue fish in the hobby. Stay away from those damsels! They are devilish little spawns of satan and will harass your other fish to death. Seriously.

Here is my chromis, Fred.

Springer damsel has been ideal in my tank with all the other fish. I also have indigo dottyback which is blue too.

Perhaps the springer is an exception in general. It appears at least 2 folks have well behaved ones. The damsels I had when I first started out were terrorists and killed 2 other fish I had. Wouldn’t let me add any other fish to the tank. I had to catch them and return to my LFS in order to continue stocking my tank.

This is probably the exception, rather than the rule though…
I think springer are more tank friendly. Mine never bothers anyone. He has his little space and chills in front.

OP it's good to add the springer last because then he will try to fit in rather then dominate any new fish added after him.

It seems others have had similar success with them. I learned something today!

To be honest I was always against damsel in the tank to due to horror stories but after my LFS said the springer was tank friendly in his tank and others having friendly springer, I tried it in mine with 11 other fish. No issues at all.

Same here! I put one in and he’s been good so far. Just make sure he’s the last one in. I put a royal gramma in last weekend and he was kind of a jerk for the first day but now they get along!

Originally the Springer was the plan but then I saw the Flameback Angel. So many people recommend them and consider them reef safer. After all the replies I think I will stick with the original plan of the Springer. Good thing my quarantine tank wasn't set up or the Flameback would have been mine. Indigo dottybacks are beautiful but probably a no with the Royal Gramma.

Do both, the damsel won't add much bio load. Angels are reef safe as long as you give them sponge in their diet.

I would like to do both. I am not as concerned about the coral nipping as I am about future aggression from the angelfish.

I think that is a minor concern. I've had a coral beauty along with 11 other fish including a damsel in a 65g tank for over 3 years with no issues. As long as they are fat, they are happy campers.
