I used to buy a bunch of hermits/snails about each trip to the fish stores, but it seems they don't go on sale much anymore...and for $1 each, it adds up over time. With a 220g display and about 400g total system volume, I can use about any amount of them. If anybody EVER has some they need to get rid of and will sell at a good price, let me know. Consider it a standing offer to buy cleanup crew.
I have noticed that since I haven't bought any hermits in a while, my population is getting smaller. Astreas seem to eventually get toppeled over and hermits eat them. The hermits, I don't think, have that great of a lifespan, cause I lose about one a week. I don't know what the major cause is, because sometimes it's large ones I find dead, sometimes small ones. Typically, it doesn't seem like the bodies get eaten very quickly, which makes me think it's not a predator killing them. Maybe it's fighting among themselves, but I don't know, especially when crabs 5 times the average will be found dead.
Either way, anytime you get snails or crabs that you don't want, let me know. I'm not sure I want more emeralds though. I put 3 in my refugium and they seem to eat the chaeto quicker than it can grow.
