Need 175W DE MH Bulb...where to get? Picked up a new (ha OLD!) setup: Oceanic 30g cube, Odyssea 175w DE MH + CF light

...and I would like to get a new bulb for the Metal Halide, as who knows how many hrs are on the one in the light.

But I cannot find 175w DE bulbs anywhere. Anyone have any suggestions?

Are you sure its 175 watts? or is it a 150 watt double ended?

Very few companies did offer 175 watt DE. Those bulbs were the same size as 150 watt but have slightly different operating specs.

150W (ANSI M81 or M102)
Operating voltage 95V
Operating current 1.8A

175W (ANSI M137/M152)
Operating voltage 132V
Operating current 1.5A

You can check the ballast that came with that fixture. The label directly on the ballast should list the type/ANSI standard.

Looks like some old threads are showing folks just using the 150w bulbs. I’m a little leery …

250w DE bulb on a 175w Ballast?

I was wondering if it's possible to run the 250w DE bulbs on a 175w ballast? The reason I'm asking this is I have an older 36" Odyssea Metal Halide fixture that has has 3 moon lights, two CF 65W Actinic lights, and two 175w DE Metal Halide lights. From what I have seen, I can't find any of the...

The ballast label stating the type will be directly on the halide ballast inside that case. The 175W DE systems were never really popular. I’ve only known Chinese companies making them. Some companies used actual 175W ballasts and some used 150W ballasts.

If it is a magnetic (core and coil) ANSI M137/M152 (175 Watt) ballast it will operate 150W DE bulbs but with reduced output. With magnetic ballasts the output current determines the actual output operating wattage. The 175W ballast provides less current than a 150W ballast.

With a 175W electronic ballast things are different. These will typically overdrive a 150W DE bulb. These are designed to output a specific wattage.

Phoenix 150w 14k. It is meant to be driven near 175w. Any 150w HQI will do. If I use electronic ballasts on my 150w, I always drive them on the 175w setting.

The Odyssea ballasts were always a little sketchy. The 250 watt odyssea ballasts always drove my bulbs to a weird color. May want to consider swapping it out for a reefbrite or icecap ballast at some point in the future.
