CUSTOM BUILD IN PROGRESS

I'm excited to share this build with you :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes: :

Since starting up my 15 gallon system I began researching my next tank and quickly realized that what I wanted did not exist so here I am!
Given that I'm new and know full well I'll be upgrading and trying different gear/setups. I decided to go with a utilitarian build.

I'll be using acrylic panels for mounting the controller (Apex) and other equipment. Since it will be mounted to the extruded aluminum I can adjust and move gear around as need.
I also over built the stand for the additional room and the ability to add a larger tank if I choose to do so. So long as the tank is less then 40 inch's long all I have to do is add wider cross braces to accommodate the larger tank (UNS 90S tank;)). The rails on either side of the tank are for hanging utility containers for tools, baster etc.

The build consists of the following so far:

Aquamaxx 22 Gallon main display (peninsula config)
Aquamaxx 17 Gallon for sump (Building chambers this weekend)
Aquamaxx WS-1
Aquamaxx AF-1
Aquamaxx Sigma 1 (Carbon ROX/GFO mix)
Eshopps Low Profile Medium Overflow
Apex Cor-15 Pump
Custom 2040 Extruded Aluminum stand w/light mount and rubber feet
BRS Titanium Heater x2
Ink Bird Controller
A LOT OF PLUMBING!

Items to purchase still:

AI Hydra 32 x 2 (Still researching/deciding) So many great options on lights!
Innovative Marine 5 gallon ATO Reservoir
Tunze 3155 ATO
Apex Pro controller
Apex Trident?
Apex DOS (AFR/AB+) still deciding...

Wood panel for the tank base and bottom of stand will be coated in Flex Seal to protect against water damage.

Looking forward to sharing this build with everyone and seeing where this adventure leads!

P.S. The Tank acquisition syndrome is real!!!

Cheers

Tanks look great and the corals look happy and healthy! Your right about the tank acquisition syndrome, I tell myself my tank is the perfect size and then Im on the Waterbox website checking out much larger aquariums.

I was real with myself when I started this hobby. Having had freshwater tanks in the past I new exactly what would happen. Planning for 3 tanks all said and done.

My tank turned 3 months old this week! Bought some more corals (1st SPS, POCILLOPORA)and may pickup a few more tomorrow (Space Invader and a Duncan).
What Is That Season 5 GIF by The Office

After writing the original build post and hinting at getting a UNS 90S tank for the future I decided to YOLO it. Ordered the 90S(48 gallon lagoon) tank which will be delivered to my LFS in 2 weeks! Pumped and can't wait to finish the build.

I'm working on the sump this weekend and will post my progress soon.

Cheers and have a great weekend everyone!

Update as of 10/28/2023:

Well my UNS 90S should be in next week! I the mean time I finished silicone the chamber walls for the sump and letting it cure this weekend. I also had the rest of my plumbing come in. I changed up the design so I need extra parts and ordered extra just incase.

Bought some additional corals and started working on dosing the tank/dialing in parameters.

Current Chemistry:

  • Phosphate = 0.06
  • Nitrate = 5.9
  • Calcium = 420
  • Alkalinity = 9.0
  • Magnesium = 1320
  • PH = 8.0 (Considering KALK)
  • Salinity = 1.025
  • Temp = 77F

Starting on the stand tonight (Wider for larger tank and a few tweaks) and hope to have it finished this weekend.

I ended up getting the Modular Marine 1600GPH overflow and want to thank R2R and everyone one who contributes to this hobby. It's definitely made my research a whole lot easier!

Cheers and see you in the next chapter.

Update as of 11-13-2023!

Well, its been a crazy ride so far and I've learned quite a bit to include having to order a bigger sump(my DIY sump is to small for the upgraded tanks size).

Here's some photos from my journey so far. I just emptied the tank and will be ordering the new sump shortly. So hopefully I'll have the tank up and running again soon. Hopefully for longer then a few days this time .

I do have a question... Would my 36X22x14 (43 gallon) tank be too small for a single Yellow tang? It would be the only fish in the tank to manage algae(Ulva)?
