I hem-and-haw about order a pair of CB Regal angels for about 9 months before finally ordered them, did not want to shell out almost 4 figures and come up empty. I feel that Regal angel at 1/2 inch size is too small and difficult to keep alive even with dedicate grow out system. I keep WC Regal angel at just about 1+ inch in the past and had good success with it so when I got notice from Biota that they have S/MD Regal angel in-stock; I shell out my hard earned cash for a pair. Date of arranged for arrival 7/9/2024.
I arranged for half day off so I have time for this precious pair of fish, but the weather would not cooperate. Due to hurricane Beryl, my clinic shut down on 7/8/2024 result in tons of work and patients overbooked for 7/9/2024. Instead of getting out at 12, I was not able to leave the clinic until 4 PM, even working through lunch, leaving my precious package at an UPS access point for hours. It came early at about 10AM but I was not able to pick it up until 6 hrs later. Then I had a meeting that lasted until 6PM. The fish were well packed and were fine. I did temperature acclimated them and netted them to the acclimation box in my QT system, which is a 40 gal breeder reef that I used to acclimated hard to keep fish. In this system is pair of wild caught Ocellaris with their Gigantea and several Haddoni, and a number of SPS and LPS along with Rock Flower Anemones and clams. It is a fully function reef that have been running for years. A friend warned me that they may fight so I put them into separate chambers in my acclimation box. The fish did fine, active but only one ate. I grounded the Otohime (C1) pellets, and mixture of Omega One flakes to a fine crumbs and mix it in tank water before squirt this mixture into the acclimation box. The light dimmed for the night, I decided not to keep the light on to try to feed them, but let them rest after the long trip.
The fish did fine overnight. This AM, I attempted to feed them again. Both fish ate but not very enthusiastic. I was not able to get them to have a full stomach so I decided to open the door of the acclimation box and let them out. Both fish were not in a hurry to get out and took a long time before they go out of the box. In this QT, they actively started to hunt, and even attempt to eat the food I feed the clowns. Feeling reasonably reassured, I left for work.
Came home briefly at lunch, I feed the fish. Both Regal seem to be reasonably full. They eat more aggressive at lunch, and even more so this evening. The tank lights dimmed and turn out for the night. Moon light is on today. I will be able to observe them if they are out but the light will not be bright enough for me to see if they retreated into the rock structure to sleep.
24 hrs in my QT system, I am reasonably sure that I can keep this pair alive.
Below are a few pictures that I took yesterday and today.
The evening, both fish are just shy of 1 inch. One has developed false eye spot, while the other does not. Both have irregular stripes but at this age, it may, likely will straight out with grow (I was told).
False eye
No false eye spot
