Introduced 10 Scarlett reef hermit crabs that were overnighted last July and followed guidelines from place of purchase. Half of them after being placed in tank did not move for days, 2 died in a few days after introduction. Think I have one survivor up to date, there is plenty for them to forage on and have a stable system. Ordered some more to arrive this Friday. Was planning on floating there bag in my sump for 20 minutes, then drip acclimate at the rate of 1 drop per second for roughly an hour. I’ll check salinity and ph before adding, trying to keep temperature from falling throughout the process. Last place recommended floating bag to equalize temperature then just add to tank so that when bag is opened and CO2 escapes, the ph doesn’t drive the ammonia levels up. Any thoughts to better methods or different procedures for there successful acclimation?

I would guess this is a problem with a supplier... Did you get your money back? Where did you get them from?

It was from saltwateraquarium.com. I’m not sure who supplies them at the moment.
I didn’t follow up for any kind of credit with the low success rate of the hermit crabs. Fridays shipment will be from Bluezooaquatics.

For what it's worth.. I've had several shipments of hermits from ReefCleaners.org with no issues.. for acclimation, all you need to do is float the bags for 30min or so to get the temps matching, then just put the hermits in your tank. Long and drawn out acclimation procedures put the livestock under way more stress than they can handle a lot of the time and if they're already coming from a questionable source, it could be the last thing that pushes them over the edge.

I can tell you that I just toss mine in and they all do fine. Sometimes not even temp acclimation. For example these little guys. I was moving tanks and thought I grabbed everything. Nope. These guys were in the tank for 2 days. With maybe a few inches of water that I left in it. Was going back to completely empty it later.

Dropped them in a new tank and no issues. All happy.

For receiving shipments. I've never been a drip person. I think it causes more stress. Just bag float and drop in.
