Ok so I’m working on setting up my new tank. I have ideas. My current tanks sump is all rock and cheato. Which works a little to well sometimes. But I kind of want a display sump.

I was considering growing various macro algae’s down there - no cheato!

I was wondering is miracle mud would be good to put in there? How much? Does it need to be in a removable container? What type of substrate should I have in the sump for the macro algae?

I was thinking maybe even getting some sea grass.

Corals Anonymous has a large selection of various macros and this is where I started wondering if I could do a grow out in the sump!

I’m sure my 2 tangs would love fresh macro to eat!

Here is a picture of the new sump layout

So I want ideas
I need inspiration!

@TangerineSpeedo knows about Miracle Mud.

Have a look at MosaidMacros and TheMacroLady as well. Wide selection. Live-plants.com is always a good place to shop if they have the interesting macros in stock.
Will check those out!

Used it for over 10 years and have no doubt that it’s beneficial to a reef tank,I put mine in trays in sump so there easy to change out

Think half every year. Need minimum 1 inch of mud from my readings. This is also my plan. Have a 60 breeder half will be a refugium. I'm pretty sold on mud. I'm hung up on lights.

I do not think Miracle mud is necessary for macroalgae as they can get what they need from the water column. However if you think that you want seagrasses in your fuge then I believe the Miracle Mud could be very beneficial because seagrasses have real roots that uptake nutrients and such from the substrate.

Agree. The holdfast is for attachment, not a “root”.

So the question is can I do both? Or should I try and keep the mud and the algae separate?

Is there a substrate that would be good for macros?

I have not used miracle mud but I seem to spend a lot of time looking at my refugium which has some live rock small amounts of Caribsea sand and several macros.

Get some Red Sea grapes, its my absolute favorite macro, your tangs probably won't think it's tasty. I watched one of my astreas take a bite and fall off a branch in disgust. On the other hand birds nest gracilaria is another one I like bu this is all that's left of mine after EVERYTHING found out it was tasty :(
