I am pleased to announce the annual Memphis frag swap. This will be put on by Memphis Area Reef Society, or MARS, with a big help from Richard and Memfish.
Details
What: MARS Frag Swap
When: Saturday, November 9th, 2013
Where: 5685 Quince Ave. Memphis, TN (this is an empty store space right next to Memfish)
Time: 10am-3pm, but we can be flexible if need be
Space for vendors: $25 per table
Admission for non-vendors: $3
If you are interested in having a table/area at the swap for your dry goods or livestock, please PM me and we will work out the details.
With Memfish being next door, getting water for your tanks should not be a problem, if you cannot bring your own. Memfish has offered to supply water to vendors.
We are planning to try and get a food truck to come and park in the parking lot, so that food will be available.
There will be raffle and door prizes, displayed on the table for all to see.
I went last year and basically you have a number of vendors set up to sale their items. there will be guest speakers on various subjects and drawings for door prizes
I am not sure if this swap will includes speakers or not but there will be door prizes and/or raffles and vendors selling their livestock, wares, etc. MARS is just getting started. WTMRAC had had the frag swaps during the past several years at the Agricenter.
Ok I got a question bout the swap. I plan on going but am also unsure of what to expect. To me it sounds kinda like a gun show. Vendors set up and people come and wheel and deal, but to people bring frags to trade with people or vendors? I have a rock with about 40-50 heads of watermelon Zoa that I wouldn't mind trading for something and a small frag of a zoa with 3 heads on it not sure what kind this one is but it is solid neon green. So would I be able to bag these two and take them with me. Or are people gonna be like what is this idiot doing
Typically yes some people bring things to trade. Not very often but I do see it. Hard to say how many vendors will be there that would be interested in trading but it is always worth a try.
At our previous frag swaps, folks were asked not to bring frags to sell as they would be competing with the vendors and often times asking much less for the same thing that some vendors had. It was mainly a frag and equipment sale. I sat up my own frag tank several times both at Middle Tennessee Swap and in Memphis. Perhaps next year our local club can set up our own tank and bring our frags to sell from the club tank. The Memphis club always did this. Several clubs from other areas also had tables with corals for sale.
That's a great suggestion! So, if you buy some coral at a frag swap, what's the suggested quarantine process? I have purchased some "dip", but wasn't sure how that fits in the whole process.
Everyone is different as far as QT'ing corals. Generally the dip has some sort of recommended instructions on it. Usually you acclimate it to your tank water and then dip it for 5-15 minutes and then rinse it and place it in your tank. If it is SPS there are varying degrees that people go to as far as QTing them.
Thanks to all that did come out to the swap this past wknd. I had a good time meeting everyone and think those that did come to support the club had a good time and probably got some nice corals as well!! Hope to see you all next time possibly in the spring! Cheers, Jam
