Hi all new here and new tank owner (literally). I bought a used setup with all HOB style filter and skimmer. My tank is cycling as I type this (90gallon with a new Fluval 407 suggested by local shop). Obviously i do not have a sump. My local shop has set everything up for me so far but said ill need a skimmer eventually.

I currently have a RO 1000 hob but i hate it. Bulky and gets the wall wet sometimes. Saw this firsthand from previous owner.

Is the Tunze 9012 a good option here and does anyone have any other suggestions or tips for this. I want to pull the trigger on one soon.

Welcome to R2R.
I used a coralife 160 for on a 64G for years as a HOB skimmer. (And canister)
Pulled good skim, quiet and inexpensive.

I have the tunze 9012 it’s a little overpowered for my tank but is very quiet and affective. It took about two weeks to get a good bubble head but now works great.
just be aware it will sputter a lot at first so make sure the air valve is on it lowest setting and very slowly turn it up so you don’t get flooding and sputtering everywhere.

Thanks for the reply. About how far is it in the water (below the waterline)? Just want to make sure it will fit.

I’ve always found that Reef Octopus makes an outstanding HOB skimmer. I’d get the one with the pump that sits inside the tank, rather than below the reaction chamber. That way when the fittings leak (and they all do) it leaks inside your tank, and not into your floor.
