Marineland seems to have a couple of different size Magnum internal polishing filters -- full-size (I guess) and a smaller Magnum 200.

I like the idea of having one for periodic, temporary use -- just the cartridge that I guess they call the "polishing" filter,,, not the bio-media and floss sleeve configuration.
*basically thinking blast everything and let the filter run overnight

I have a 40 gallon tank with 12" water depth (top of sand to water level).

Full-size Magnum questions:
- Does it suck (input) from the bottom? (I assume so)
- Does it need to be fully submerged,,, full 11" (I think)?
*If anyone uses one with 12" (or less) water height and sand, I'd like to hear that's not an issue. (Otherwise, I'll probably go for the smaller 200 to be safe).

These are the two models I'm referring to:
Marineland Magnum (Full Size)
Marineland Magnum 200

...searched around a bit here and YouTube but wasn't confident about anything

Last try before I just order one and see what happens:
Anyone use full-size Marineland Magnum Internal Polishing filter with 12" or less water height and sand?

For the full-size, the slots on each side are the suction. The manual does state to keep the filter submerged. You are going to at least need it submerged over the discharge, otherwise you may have a water spray issue.

Thank you, sir! This is very helpful...

EDIT -- weird thing is the Amazon pictures of the one I'm looking at don't show slots on the side:
Marineland Magnum Polishing Filter
*not sure if I trust Amazon pictures or if I'm actually looking at a different model

It's the same, the photos are not at an angle that show the intake. It's a part of the pump section, the other part is just a canister.
