I’ve had my mandarin a little while now and he’s been eating copepods very well, sometimes even eating frozen.
for some reason he sleeps on the surface of the tank and turns pale when the lights go off but I’ve recently noticed his belly looks sunken.
his belly does not look like this during the day but looks sunken at night but I can’t see his spine or ribs.
does anyone have any insight on this as in confused and worried he’s starving ☹️

If it is eating well, it may become fine. Let's call experts.

If it looks fat, that is because u may hv well fed it and will be okay(I can't spot that in photo see if someone can spot)

Does look a bit skinny. How long have you had it? They often times are shipped very skinny as they do not eat for a while before being shipped.

Sleeping on the sandbed, and turning pale is completely normal.

He looks really thin to me. Your tank seem bare, from what I can see on the picture. You likely need to find other source of food for him or get him to another tank.
How big is your tank? How new? And what other fishes are in it?

Healthy, happy Mandarin do not sleep high like your’s.

Its got a bit of fat on it but that sucken belly isnt a good sign. If its eating well now you will be ok, just make sure you have enough food.

The turning pale at night thing is perfectly normal.

normal to turn pale at night, but not normal to swim at the top like that. From the pic, it seems the water surface is very still, are you sure the water is oxiginated enough? Do you have a skimmer?
Depends, my female used to swim up to the surface every night, back and forth for many months. I read it’s part of finding a mate or something. If it stays up there then it could be an oxygen problem.

Wrong post. I am not sure how so I deleted it. Add a picture of my Mandarin pair this AM instead. Both of them are in there but the female is a little difficult to see.
