Sounds good thankyou I ran my mag around 1300 for a while and never kept color In my chalices and some of my more delicate acros and since I've ran it in the higher mentioned range I'm getting great colors I just wanted to know what the limit was before it was to high ?

NSW is 1280-1350 on the MG, Your's is not to high, some people run it over 1600 in the hope to kill Bybrosis for limited time. Mine was that high for over a year, I dropped it down to around 1350 just to be closer to NSW and not have to dose as much.

Yeah I've noticed on my two frag tanks on is an they are two seperate frag tanks one I run at 1400 and then the other tank is hooked up to the main system the acans and chalices heal faster with the higher mag in the main display that runs at 1500 so needless to say I'm going to tie in my other frag tank or just do what i've Been wanting to do for a while now and get a larger frag tank it might be hard to sneak a larger tank in with the Ol' ladies eyes open!..... Yeah I'm glad I invested in some neo-mag so I don't have to dose anymore other than a few water changes a month I hardly do anything to my tank other than adding new frags ofcourse !!

some people treat bryopsis with tech m and bring levels up to and over 1700 with little ill-effect. you are in fact, exactly where you want to be.

Can lower mag level have bad effect? I dont dose mag but had buddy test it and was at 1000. My zoas and pali are doing great but I tried a small red lobo and frog spawn and they went down hill fast

Sorry to jack thread but was just curious

Thanks

1000 is way too low for stonies imo. Keep it over 1300+, 1250 is the approx mag level of nsw if memory serves me correctly. How is everyone testing for mag?

nsw can be 1200-1400, but 1000 is too low, water ability to have Ca and Alk at the proper levels are both effected by having low Mg.
If/ when you start dosing Mg make sure you keep an eye on salinity as it will rise.

If Mg is low it is hard to get and keep Ca up no matter how much Ca you add. Once you get Mg up it lowers itself at a lower pace then Ca and Alk, for every 1 drop dkh in Alk, you Ca will drop 7ppm, not measurable in our test kits. Elos and Salifert seems to be the most precise Mg test kits, but when it comes to MG precise is not needed, but accuracy is, so some of the other ones work just fine for that.

I have been using the Salifert mag test kits and they only test to 1500ppm.

What test kits will test higher levels, like 1700, for those who run high/ may have overdosed/ are doing the bryopsis treatment??

I use NatuReef mag test kit (as well as cal. & alk.) I love them!

My mag. stays right at 1500 and I never dose for it. Doing a 10 gallon a week water changing (on a 180g) using Oceanic salt maintains 1500.
