I have been using Barnacle shells for many yeas in my reefscapes as they have so many advantages. They are light, take next to no water displacement, cheap and provide lots of hiding places for small fish. They also weather in well after a few weeks and blend in with the scape.
I put clumps of them most near the rear of my scape. Blennies and small damsels in particular love to go in them and even spawn in there.
I picked up 2 more clumps for just £6 each from the guy selling shells on the Llandudno pier.(Wales UK) Always does me a deal on 2 or more clumps of barnacle shells
However they are becoming more difficult to obtain he tells me here in the UK.
