Hello I was wondering if there was any product that I could use to sort of filter the tap water or remove any unwanted elements such as zinc, iodine and others instead of buying an RO water system. It would be very helpful. Have a great day !

I am not aware of anything. Before RO systems were readily and cheaply available to the general public, I used to have to go to a LFS with multiple buckets, and by RO water by the gallon. It truly is best for a reef aquarium. There is just too much wrong with tap water that can not easily be filtered out. RO systems are not that expensive now, and incredibly easy to install. Do you mind if I ask you don't want to get one.

It's not just trace elements like zinc ect you want to get rid of. It's also macro elements like calcium magnesium silicates and phosphate. Only other way to get rid of them is to use DI resin directly. But you will need a lot of it. Distillation is also an option but slow and energy intensive. Considering the running cost, there is no better option than RO.

One of the channels I follow was visiting Germany and they were using large containers of DI resin and just pushing tap water through it.

Expensive way to make water. Of course you could just use DI resin, but it won't be cheap. Using a larger container is not cheaper it will just last longer before it is exhausted and needs to be changed or regenerated.

A RO/DI unit is designed the way it is because it is the most efficient and cheapest way to make 0 TDS water.
There are other ways, but not as cost efficient per gallon.

Don't mean to hijack OP's topic, but do you mind if I inquire as to what RO system you have?

The end is near.. that's how a Walmart.com link, to a home distilling kit, comes through

Are you on city/town water? Or a well? I used to go but gallons of distilled water to fill when I still had a small tank. Then I realized my artesian well did the same work as the rodi system. I just use it out of the bathtub faucet, now.

I have a hybrid home water softener and filtration system. It’s basically the first two stages of a rodi. Sediment filter and then a carbon filter that’s larger than a scuba tank. I have this plumbed into my homes incoming water supply so all water in my house runs through it. I now use tap water for all my tanks. It backwashes itself every 2-3 days and they claim the filter never needs to be replaced.

Well, I learned something. Didn't know of any other way. That being said, the RODI system is a standard for a reason. It's the way I'm going.

No problem, I bought an Apec RO system. It is meant for household use, but I purchased it for my tank. When I used a TDS meter on my tap water it was 150 ppm, when I checked at my RO it is .001. So I am glad I made the choice I did. Why do you ask?

That’s not true, but tap water in some cases is ok.

Ever test either the incoming water to know what was there, or the finished water to see if it was ok?

Well water here. We have something similar from Kentico. It's a sediment and iron filter that has a specialized media in it. Every few days is uses air to purge and clean the media. Kinda like a skimmer, I guess. They claim the media never needs to be changed. But we still have a water softener also inline after it.

I don't see how a large carbon filter would never need to be changed; you can't clean the carbon of contaminates.

We do that, but it is typically in a commercial setting. As you might imagine they go through DI resin like no one's business!
