Hi guys,

Not sure if this is the right place for this.....I guess my long spined urchin died. This guy was a pain in the butt however I still feel bad about this. I bought this guy in a package deal with some corals, being new I had no idea what I was getting into. I put him in my display and he promptly went about eating up all the algae, coralline included.

He did such a good job that I think he was starving, so about three months ago I put him into a QT tank I got and let the tank pretty much get overgrown with algae. He seemed happy as a duck on a junebug. I don't pay much attention to that tank however and a couple days ago I noticed he was in the same spot as he had been for at least a few days anyways. I gave a looksie and it appeared he was somewhat tangled up in a dead gorgonia that was lying around in there. I got him untangled, and it wasn't really that bad at all as he lost or broke just a few spines. Two days later now and he appears dead having lost all of his spines completely.

I guess my questions are is he dead ?? Should I try turkey baster to mouth resuscitation ?? Can I grab him his naked body with my hands to get him out of the tank or is that not wise ?? Can I grab the multitude of spines laying about the bottom of the tank with my hands for removal ?? I assume not in both cases so does anyone have any suggestions about how to remove the corpse and the spines.

Thanks in advance.....

This should go in the invert forum. If you ask a mod they will move it for you.

If he lost his spines he is a goner. you can just remove him with hands or even a plastic cup and scoop him up.
