Hi All Brain fade here. New tank is 4 months old. I bought some sodium carbonate. Unused so far. But why did I buy it? Does it have an ideal use? For water changes? As a routine additive? Can anyone out there remember my master plan? Thanks all.

It is a good alkalinity additive with a moderate pH boost. You can also make a DIY two/three part alk and calcium additive with it. :)

Thank you Randy. Now I think of it I bought it to keep pH up and stable. Is there a calculator to work out how much to add relative to tank size and raise needed etc? Thank you.

Do not add it based on pH. Only add it based on alkalinity measurement and need for alk. The pH boost is a bonus.

Tis calculator shows how much to use to boost alk.

LOL (again!) Yes, my master plan is coming back to me now. At the moment my dKH is steady at 9.3 - 9.6. I think the Tropic Marin salt is supposed to mix to 7.0 or so. Should I shoot for 9.3 or let the tank drift slowly to the Tropic Marin level? Thank you again.

Any value from 7-11 dKH is fine, IMO.
