No idea what I’m doing with sumps but I mean it looks like the pictures?

There are huge bubbles coming out of my drain pipe though like it’s sucking air and the filter sock isn’t really doing its job… but I’ll figure the sock thing out later. I just want to make sure the bubbles aren’t because I’m doing something wrong—-

Not sure if I should unplug it all and go to sleep, or trust it to run overnight xD

You will want to put a gate valve on your drain

Bubbles are harmless, other than promoting salt creep, and annoying you

Would a gate valve be more for when I need to do maintenance or if an emergency occurs on the tank in my case?

With the return pump turned off the water in my sump is far from flooding. Am I still at risk with running a single tube down into the sump?

I have a 90 gallon with a 30, maybe even 40- not sure- sump.

I’m relieved to hear the bubbles are fine!!

I think what Solo is telling you is that you have too much water going too fast into the sump, that's where your problem lies. You need to use a gate valve to reduce the amount of water going in. You need to have the amount of water leaving the same as the water entering more or less. A gate valve will let you dial it in more precise than with a ball valve.

No, DO NOT put a gate valve on a durso drain. Unless you want a wet floor.

The way to quiet a durso is to open the air hole. Sounds counterintuitive but that's the way to go. Drill a little bit each time until you find a sweet spot.

But, IMO, it's better to make that a herbie drain. If they are same size hole it doesn't matter but if one is larger make that your emergency. The smaller one will be a siphon with a gate valve. Your return would be over the back of the tank.

It will be safer and quieter.

Please do not put a restriction of any sort on a tank with only 1 drain pipe. They can clog and eventually the tank could overflow.

Control the flow by either dialing back a DC pump or teeing off the return pump if it is a non controllable AC pump.

Drains with gate valves are better left to the more modern Herbie (multiple stand pipe) systems.

Good catch on the Herbie. I was thinking about mine which is a Bean Animal where the gate valve is used.
