I really cant decide between the two

If I went with Trident, I'd buy a 2016 Apex EL just to use with the Trident. I'm currently running the Apex classic perfectly fine.

I found an 2016 EL head for under $90 and I found a Trident for $280. $370

Whats turning me off from the Trident is that I have to use their reagent or use ABC reagents.

Then comes in the KH Guardian (KHG). I found a unit for $300.

It only tests for ALK, which is obviously the most important of the three.

I'm able to connect the KHG to my Apex classic through their AIM module and view the tank DKH on Fusion.

I can also make my own reagent for it.

I dont know if I need to test Calcium and Magnesium that often. Im thinking I could test those with Salifert weekly or biweekly.

1st world problems lol.

Thanks!

I can’t speak on the guardian but I use trident and it gets the job done… like you said I use the abc reagents which I think are fairly priced.. I think it cost me $10 a month for reagent which is fair considering what it does.. my trident has been pretty accurate as I double check it on the weekends with a Hannah or salifert if I’m feeling frisky haha!

Would like to bump this thread. Hedging between the trident and KHG. Would like some input and pros and cons on which route to go.
Leaning towards the trident as there is a wider user base.

@Troylee you think I should go with the trident?
I don’t have any experience with khg only a trident.. trident works extremely well for alkalinity but goes wonkers on the calcium and mag from what I’ve experienced. As soon as your reagents get low it drifts up on those.. I’ve never had a problem with the alk tests it stays almost spot on to my Hannah

The alk is my primary concern anyway. I’ll be dosing with a kalk stirrer so the cal should stay rock stable as long as the alk is testing right.

It’s great for that.. calcium will rise with kalk as I have that issue so to combat it I do water changes.

I suppose on the front of the alk testing right and the other are hit or miss. I may as well stay with the trident being that the KHG is only alk anyway.
The trident is great for trends whether it’s super accurate or not. I’ve had zero issues with alk tests just the calcium as the regents dwindle down it drifts up but I honestly don’t care that much lol.. I just use it for alk myself and it’s solid for that.

I went with the trident. Found a lightly used one for sale in the marketplace. Same price as a new KHG. Fingers crossed it works out well. I’m excited and also nervous buying a used piece of equipment.

Pretty easy to work on.. Neptune sells a service kit also if you wanna change all that out before it goes online, then it’s practically a refurbished unit you’d get from the factory
