Looks like some bad developments over the weekend. My beautiful pink nepthea koji wada is in bad shape today. The pistol shrimp has built up a mountain of sand that was covering the koji wada's main stalk (and the toadstool's behind it):

It's been all shrunk up all day. I lifted the base out of the sand, but not much better:

It's falling over a bit limp. Even a bit flat, I'd say.

This is one of my favorite corals, so I hope it is able to bounce back.

The other concern is my hammer colony. It has a couple of dying heads that are making me think of BJD:

Some wispy whitish stuff coming off of it... and no cipro on hand : -(

And I'm working on my POTM. Settled on the montis for this one:
Orange + yellow + macro

yellow only + macro

Going to bring the GoPro tomorrow and see if I can make it work underwater...

I’m sure it’s fine. Mine gets unhappy all the time but still grows like a weed. And if it does die I’ll send you some big pieces of mine.

Switched out the carbon yesterday, but the Pink Nepthea is continuing on its downhill slope. You can see the stalk splitting and the base is becoming pale:
1703015448452.jpeg

Time for emergency response crew.
1703015463912.jpeg

Definitely not doing well. The stalk is squishy. Called the local pink Nepthea expert who propogates these for a big name coral store and got some advice. Cut off all the branches with some firmness to them and did 15min lugols dip:
1703015549514.jpeg

About 10 cuts of varying sizes.

Now into a cup with new rubble:
1703015583647.jpeg

1703015592341.jpeg

Going to be switching out carbon every two weeks for a while. Expert says it could be from the build-up of bad stuff from the nems or (perhaps more likely) terpenes from the leathers. And I am almost 3 weeks behind on changing out my carbon, so that tracks--BAD JoJo!! See, don't be lazy.

Silver lining: if these cuts survive, I'll have 10 frags of Koji Wada that I can send out to my reefy friends!

Rare back-shot of the tank:

Don't spend much time back there. Wasn't planning on having nuclear death palys back there either... threw a frag of a few polyps back there as a temporary home and forgot about them. Looks like I'm going to have a back wall of palys now

This sounds about like what happened with my colony. I equated it to terpenes as I didn't have nems in the tank and carbon was a month over due...

If you haven't seen the hawkfish on a monti cap photo yet, I think we can all just hang our hats.

I still need to repair mine, those two are stunning. The one with the most blue is most likely the male, with those two the lines aren’t an easy way to differentiate male from female as they both seem as bright as eachother.

Are pink streak wrasse as sweet and endearing as people say they are? Also I'm in awe of the size of that rock flower anemone
