I got this yellow tailed Cleaner wrasse like a week ago but it swam right down to the sand bed and wasn't active at all, it would just lye down on the sand 24/7. I then took a closer look and noticed a big bump on it's stomach with some wierd grey thing popping out. Can someone help me identify what's going on? Thanks

Please read and answer as much as you can in this sticky. Also additional white light pics and a short video can help

I gently flipped it over and found a hole coming out of it's stomach, it's definetly not ich that caused it. I also tested the water and everything was close to perfect

Hello, and welcome to Reef2Reef!

That looks like a prolapsed intestine. Sometimes these get better on their own, but usually don't. I've never seen one on a cleaner wrasse before, but I don't know what else it could be.

The causes for this are not well know; egg binding, constipation, internal protozoans and physical damage are suspected. There really is no treatment for this, sorry.

Jay

Sorry to hear. Ive had mine 8 years and as Jay mentioned, on this particular specimen, this is unheard of. I know they try to eat everything that hits the tank but their mouths are small and to ingest something causing constipation would be low. IF and IF youre up to it, you could cut by the anal area since it perished and see what was causing the swelling at the anal opening

Yeah I actually did cut open it's stomach a little but I didn't find anything.
