I just picked up two used Ecotech Radion XR15 blues from a friend. They came with the little X shaped slide piece, but no other way of mounting them. This is the tank they are going on, it's a Tideline 62gallon lagoon AIO tank.

I would really like to mount these lights without spending an extra $200 just on hardware.

I'm somewhat handy with basic carpentry stuff but I don't have access to a machine shop or anything.

Home construction is a mobile home with gypsum board and paper walls. I'm not against mounting to walls or ceiling but I just have to be careful about it.

Check the DIY forum. There are several threads for hanging lights from pipe stand or mounting off the back of the cabinet. In your case, tank at wall and setup/running you might be able to modify a method to come up the sides and over the tank.
