Found this in my tank this morning. It was next to my clam. It is attached to a snail shell but not by the solid base, but by the threads coming off of it. I have one vote that is is a sponge.

I think it has been determined to be my clams foot/ byssal threads. My clam is in the sand it did not like rock. It has been in the same spot for months and still seems to be doing well. Not sure how these were removed or how they got to the top of the sand, but the clam seems fine so far. I did pick the clam up and looked at the bottom of it. There was a smooth fleshy disk with a few strands coming from the center with sand attached to them. I gently placed him back where he was and he returned to normal. I have read where they can shed a foot, but I do not know what happened.

Well I just read a post where someone said their clam did the same thing. They found the byssal threads next to the clam. Then the clam moved to another location and stuck it's self. I have noticed my goniopora has been messing with the clam some. I know the goni moves with the water flow, but I swear it tries to reach things around it. I can change the flow and it continues to find ways to touch the clam. Maybe the clam wants to move. It has turned a little bit in the last couple of days. We will see.

I have never seen anything like that, or heard of what your talking about. I learn something new every other day 
I have heard that you need to be careful when letting clams sit on the sand. They can dig down into the sand and attach themselves to the bottom glass. It's not a big deal unless you want to move them. You can accidentally tear the foot (or whatever it's called). So just keep it in mind if you try to move the little guy.
Also, this is nothing I have experience with but rather is something I heard a long time ago. I just thought I'd pass it along. Sounds plausible to me.

I normally put my clams on an old shell or something for them to attach to, that way if I want to move them I can. My lfs uses plastic lids with their clams. It's ugly, but it works, then I just trim around the foot and glue the lid to a rock.

Well my clam still seems to be doing well. I could see a few strands of stuff under him with sand sticking to it. Looks like he is growing another foot. Thanks for the input and suggestions.
