I have a coral shipment coming and I have seen different videos like wwc saying not to dip them but others are saying you must dip them. But I think it was my first reef that they dipped there coral and it died that’s what I am scared of. I have 2 other coral that I didn’t dip and things seem to be fine. Also if it helps I am getting them form frag box corals. It would be great to answer asap

My OPINION: (some) coral dips are hard on corals and can contribute to a coral bleaching/dying shortly after dipping and or being added to the tank. Skipping the coral dip is likely less stressful for the coral, however, increases the likelihood of introducing pests/diseases to your tank. . .

Best case scenario you would have separate coral quarantine tank and skip the dip. . . but if that is not an option you have to weigh the pros and cons.

I usually dip my coals but I have skipped it on occasion, and sometimes it's because I have a particularly sensitive coral. . .

again this is my OPINION, and I am sure others will disagree.

So I tend towards dipping corals (that can handle it) in an iodine bath. Inspect them as well as I can and hope for the best. I get most of mine from the same vendor and I’m less cautious with those. New vendors - depending on the corals- may get an extra dip in something else if I see anything that looks out of place.

I use Coral rx and dip every coral for 10 minutes. I also use a pipette to dislodge any critters. I’d rather lose one coral than the whole tank, but there are risks to dipping or not.

I'm like @Reefer Matt and I use Coral Rx.. I never used to dip my corals and had issues with monti eating FWs, and who knows what else. Since I've turned my tank around last Dec I dip everything. I buy mostly from @Pieces of the Ocean since they are local, and their frags are pristine, but I dip anyway.

I never dip unless I know their coming from Michigan. :zany-face:

I buy from vendors that have a lot more to lose than me.

I stopped dipping a while ago. It doesn't do anything against the true pests like aptaisia, clove polyps, colonials, etc...

How did you dip your first batch?
What's your process?

I stopped dipping and switched to quarantining corals over a year ago. Dipping is for removing coral pests - they will make themselves apparent in the QT. What dipping can't touch is fish pests - only being in QT with zero fish for 60 days can prevent velvet or ich being transmitted in on a frag.

All you need is a 10 gallon tank and a light. A chinese black box LED is more than enough.

I don’t dip anymore, but I give my coral a scrub (fragstones, fleshless skeleton) with a toothbrush I have reserved for that.

One options is contacting the vendor to understand what they do pre-shipment and constant care. Perhaps they dip and QT everything. Don't think Frag Box frags and just sells imports therefore best speak with them and ask for what they suggest as well. End of day gonna get lots of opinions and everything is a risk. Observation container wouldn't be a bad idea. Last anyone wants is introducing an issue to the main display that later may not be corrected or require more effort than just being overly cautious at first.

If you watch frag box tv they dont dip the incoming corals. They do have a video out on dipping corals though so maybe search that.

I've never dipped a coral. I've never had a problem of any kind as a result.

I always dip mine with potassium chloride (from Amazon) no matter where the coral came from. This is very gentle of the corals.

I bought from a sponsor here and acro eating flatworms came off in the dip… you just never know.
Would you be so kind as to share?
I've used the same 4 vendors for this build but pretty much have what I want from them and will be soon broadening my horizons. It would be nice to know if there's a chick running around the neighborhood with herpes.

Sent you a PM, it was in 2020 so no reason to throw a vender under the bus for something 4 years ago :)

The fact that you have corals "on the way" and you don't already have a plan points to the very common mistake of moving too fast.

I don't dip.

I don’t dip unless I see something. I do inspect them carefully and blow them off well with a turkey baster. The only batch I ever dipped grew aiptasia and took a day to open.
