Losing a fish sucks, but losing a fish you have had for awhile and not knowing what caused the death, sucks worse. A Royal Gamma I have had for about 2 years was stuck on the grill of the overflow this morning. And I had no warning. I changed the tank that she was living in, well over a month ago. All the other inhabitants are fine. And I would have thought that deaths from the changeover would have occurred before now.

Sometimes fish die for no reason or fault of anything or anyone . If everything else is okay don't do anything drastic. Most likely it was just part of life. Still sad but part of having pets. To bad he didn't sink, your clean up crew could of had a feast and you never would of seen or known. Last year I had a fish that was fine, an hour later I noticed a group of crabs gathered around and when I made them move away all that was left was the tail.
