Dennis is a great guy, always helpful. In the Houston area I usually hit up FJW only because of how close it is to me, but other then that I go to Ocean Life off of 610/59 or if I want to really go out I go to Infinity Fish.Their tanks are always in great shape when I am there, one of my favorites in the area.
I wasn't impressed with Ocean Life last time I was there, despite having read such good things. The store and tanks were pretty dirty all around. Perhaps I should have another look since it has been a while.
Aquarium design group was very clean when I visited a few months ago, and had a good spread of small/large fish and corals.
Galactic Corals was kind of a haul, but again everything was in pretty good shape when I drove out there. Not quite as well maintained as FJW and ADG, but I would go back.
Fish Gallery had all their saltwater tanks down for some kind of refurbishment/reorganization, not sure if they are back up yet.
Having had several species, if you go lyretails I would do minimum 7 in this size. Preferably 10. They will reward you in numbers without really great behaviors. Adding more later will be tougher if the dominant one goes male Before you add more. With your quarantine plan add the group early.I originally had 5 Anthias on my list, but knocked it down to 3 because I wasn't sure how my bioload would evolve based on my future planned fish. I think what I may do is before I move into any aggressive fish, I'll evaluate if I want to add more and go from there.
Out of curiosity, what's your opinion on a good sized school of Anthias in this size tank?

Wow. How can the same tank being built at the same time have so differences. Do you have a separation wall in the sump? I do not. This is really interesting.Got all of my under cabinet lights installed. So much better..

Looking good.Apex Confusion
I spent some time after work setting up my Apex and I've run into a few issues.
Salinity Sensor
I calibrated the sensor using the provided reference packets, but it's reading 39+. Using my hanna checker which was just calibrated, I'm reading 1.025 (35ppt), a whole 4 points off. I may try to recalibrate, but this is a significant difference.
Temp Sensor
No calibration was required in the app, so I just put it in. My tank registers as 77 using two other methods to check and 76~ on the Apex.
Refugium Light
On the bright side, the refugium light install/setup went off without a hitch.
I may try to recalibrate the Salinity probe again this afternoon. I know you can calibrate the temp probe, but the instructions said it was unnecessary. I'll try it out anyways because as it stands it's wrong.Looking good.
I would let the salinity probe soak for a few days and see if it comes down. They are notoriously finicky. Most people only use it to watch trends up or down and don't actually trust the number it gives you. Mine says 34.2 right now and I know it is reading low. Bubbles will throw the reading off. Some people mount them upside down so bubbles can not get trapped in the probe.
You can adjust (calibrate) the temp probe using the Apex task function.
I am now trying to silence the tank. Have you figured out the secret sauce? Do you start with the main drain fully open? Any hints would be greatly appreciated. The tank officially ran overnight for the first time with enough water to run the return pump. I'm trying to tune the noise on the overflow by getting the waterline right below the emergency drain, but man is it hard ... I'm doing minor changes and letting it sit for 10min+ to hear for changes and it's a struggle.
The Cycle
I've begun using Brightwell's cycle products (XLM/something). I dosed their ammonia first then their bottled bacteria.
Looking good so far at 2.00ppm ammonia.
The Salt
So.... I bought red sea blue bucket salt from BRS and though I bought enough salt... I did not. Using a calibrated hannah checker I'm sitting at 1.016 sg after using the entire box of salt. I'm heading to my LFS after work once I confirm they carry blue bucket.
