I got mine from him last night (live in same area). Mine came in at same 1.021 and acclimated. Also missing 2 fish which he told me about and refunded right away. In no way upset with not getting the 2 additional fish as I would rather have healthy fish that are eating than getting semi healthy or not eating fish. Im happy so far with my purchase.
Does Dr reef allow people to pick up? I saw he has a 918 area code. I live in okc.

Big Fish Update

The fish came in at 1.021 and my tank is @ 1.025. I exchanged 300-400ml of water every 10 minutes till it was in balance (about an hour).

Fish are IN!

After seeing a 3pt difference, i added airline tubing on an external air pump to provide some oxygen. Egg crate on top to prevent my 2 cats from doing .... cat things.

The midas blenny is nearly black. My experience with them is that this is typical during shipment and that stress effects their colors more than many fish.

Some Fish are MISSING
I originally was expecting 5 more fish:
- 3 more Lyretails
- 1 Radiant wrasse
- 1 Checkerboard wrasse

I spoke with DrReef after receiving the order and they informed me that the fish in question were held back because they were not eating. They are going to hold them till they eat normally and then will ship them out (I'm not paying for shipping). While I'm disappointed that I didn't receive all my fish, I'm happy that DrReef is this careful with their live stock.

I'll provide updates later this evening on the fish's status!
I think that's great he's gonna wait and get them eating. I might have to place an order from him. I'm tired of my house looking like a fish store from quarantining fish.

Yea his warehouse is in Tulsa. When I asked before placing my order he did say that I could pick them up. Local Pickup is an option when checking out as well.

PAR Readings

I recieved an apogee from BRS - the kind you borrow - and tested my lights throughout the tank. Below are the specs worth noting:

- 12" above the water
- Ati sunpower 8x80w T5
- (2) Reefbrite XHO LED's

20220219_172708.jpg

The average PAR is the tank is roughly 373. To be honest I'm surprised the PAR is as high as it is, but I'm not unhappy as this is aimed at being an SPS dominant tank. Either way, I'm glad i have this information moving forward.

Second Fish Batch

While I wait for DrReef to send out my remaining fish for the first batch (3x lyretail, 1x radiant wrasse, 1x checkerboard wrasse), I figured I'd post my thoughts on my next batch of fish:

  • 2-3x Pyramid Butterfly's
  • 1 Earmuff Wrasse
I'm still in the phase of adding peaceful fish. In a future batch I plan on adding in tangs + 2 blotched anthias if I can get my hands on them. The second batch is still a WIP!

Coral News!

Yesterday I ordered a few tester corals from Tidal Gardens. I picked up...
  • "Hot Pink" Stylophora
  • Rainbow Stylophora
  • Pink Seriatopora
  • Bali Green Slimer
These are all very much hardy/starter SPS. The green slimer is obviously the only acro here and more of a "can I really?" buy.

Dip

I've always used Bayer to dip my SPS. Using 10ml/cup of tank water for 15 minutes then transfer to a clean container for 15 minutes then another clean water transfer for 10 minutes. This is all while using a turkey baster to occasionally blow off random pests. I also have my old fragging supplies so I'll remove the plug/base and replace with my own.

Random

A friend of mine has a duncan + hammer he's willing to give me, but he's out of town till next week. I'm super excited and again, these are tester corals so I think both a hammer and duncan fit that category pretty well.

Anthias Trouble

tl;dr one of the anthias (the bigger one) has what appears to be a wound and a bacterial infection. I've dosed the tank with Metraplex and will be going to my LFS after work to pickup Kanaplex + Focus.

Current speculation is this was caused by aggression from the other anthias who may be transitioning, but I find that hard to believe because the anthias in question is so much larger. I want to hope that this isn't Uronema, though from my research on Humblefish's website is that Uronema shows up as red marks/sores whereas the ones on this Anthias are clearly white.

Well if you weren't following the Sickness&Disease thread, the Anthias most likely had Uronema and did not make it. My last ditch effort was a 90 minute ruby rally bath in clean saltwater (matched salinity/ph/temp), but the fish died with 5 minutes left on the timer :/

That said, I've already contacted DrReef who confirmed they did a Formalin bath + fed metro. They will be shipping out replacements and honoring the DOA even after a week. From my research, it appears a large volume of Anthias in supplier facilities have uronema and it's a problem. Either way I'll keep a close eye on all my fish.

On Brighter News...

My tester coral arrives this morning. I'll post updates on those later today.

Coral Update

All coral were dipped in CoralRX as my Bayer delivery was delayed on Amazon. They all have solid PE after being in the tank for 1-2 hours except for the bidsnest. I have them all on my frag rack near the bottom of the tank.

I've never really had a tank with such high PAR so I'm a bit nervous raising the rack higher. The sand directly under the lights is 300~ PAR, on the outside 250~.

Initial arrival (Stylo + Green Slimer)
20220223_122604.jpg

After 1-2 hours (Stylo + Green Slimmer)
Full PE on the stylo and very noticable PE on the green slimmer.

Initial Arrival (Stylo + Birdsnest)
20220223_122618.jpg

After 1-2 hours (Stylo + Birdsnest)

Full PE on the stylo, some-minimal PE on the birdsnest. To be honest, the birdnest looked the worst out of the 4 on arrival with some bleached spots near the base. I find it slightly ironic the green slimmer is doing better than the birdsnest, but they're both supposed to be hardy acro's so here we are.

Coral Update

All the coral seem to be doing well. The Birdnest I mentioned that had zero PE yesterday now has some PE. I also realized my frag rack was upside down... that has been corrected.

The Stylo's look very happy. Not much to say here.

Both acro + birdsnest have good PE. This is with most but not all of my lights on (LEDS + 2 bulb T5's).

I also noticed yesterday that now that my lights are on, I'm developing diatoms on my sand and rock. It's hard to see in the picture below, but if you look to the bottom right there's a patch of sand I moved around to make the diatoms more apparent.

Either way, I'm not concerned as this is expected for new tanks.

Looking good. And now you’ve got something growing for your snails to eat.

With my lights now on for 10 hours per day, my diatoms have increased by a lot and some hair algae has started to show its face. All expected for a new tank, but here's the pics.

20220225_163558.jpg

Nutrients

After my first water change, both N03/PO4 have gone down. Nitrates are roughly 4ppm and Phosphates hit 0ppm. I did my first dose of NeoPhos today to bring up my phosphate above 0 to 1ppm, going to test again tomorrow.

Copepods

I received my order of copepods from AlgaeBarn today and they're sitting in my sump till lights out tonight. Most will be dosed into my display, the rest into the sump.

Update!

It's been about a week since my last update. Let's go!

The Bad

Since turning on my lights for my coral, green hair algae is everywhere. This is new tank uglies and not much I can do about it. I'm currently maintaining my Nitrate+Phosphate > 0 by dosing NeoPhos + NeoNitrate to prevent any other algae/bacteria issues besides GHA (as well as to keep my coral happy).

20220305_110223.jpg

The Good

All of my Lyretails were delivered from DrReef (including the one that died 3-4 days after delivery). All the fish are eating like pigs and starting to color back up.

The coral are all doing great. Every SPS including the acro (bali green slimer) has full polyp extension throughout the day and are maintaining the colors they had when they arrived.

I picked up 2 additional test coral from AquaSD; a gold hammer + duncan. Both are looking good!

20220305_105935.jpg

Next Steps

For the GHA, I have been just doing normal maintenance plus using a tooth brush every other day on some of the rocks to try and battle it. I'm looking at maybe adding additional CuC members specifically to battle the GHA, but I'm unsure as to which just yet.

Yeah i have been.
Same here. Our tanks are about The exact same age and lighting. I’m getting the same GHA as you. Mine is not quite as long as yet but I just put my CUC in 2-days ago. We’ll see how it goes, I also may need to get more CUC that targets GHA like turbo snails or hermits.

Yeah i have a tiny CuC and no fish that eat algae (yet), so I'm kind of left with other options. My nitrates/ phosphates are low but not zero, so i know those are fine. I'm doing weekly water changes, i toothbrush the gha every other day, and i started target dosing h202 today (1ml/10g).

The gha will go away eventually, but i like being active with my tank so i don't have a problem with the manual work till it does
