How should I filter my new FijiCube 22.4G AIO

The FijiCube 22.4g aio comes with a filter sock holder and they sell socks for 6 dollars. If you use these how do you clean yours? I have considered buying 14 socks so I can wash them once a month in the washer. That is about 70 dollars of socks and then I have put stinky socks in my washer. I don't know how bad that really is but everyone on here seems to agree it is pretty bad.

I could also just cut some eggcrate place it in the sock holder and then use floss pads on that.
