Setting up a separate frag tank for coral frags is a good idea for many reasons. Some of them include a place to observe new frags for pests or issues, a place for display corals that need extra care, a place to grow out frags for resell or trade etc.

How many R2R'ers keep a separate frag tank and what's your purpose?

I just set one up a few months ago and got the first three frags about ten days ago. I wanted a place where I could buy things I like without having to put them on a frag shelf in my DT, without having to choose where they are going to be glued right away, and a place where I can more easily treat them if needed.

And I wanted a second tank . . .

I am plumbed into 1 system. I hate it when I see a display with little racks stuck on the side of a display. In my opinion, it sort of defeats the purpose of having a nice display tank.

I also don't want to do the work of having two systems. So my frag is plumbed to a single sump.

Same for me, I have a 130 gal display, 2x 20 gal frag tanks and a 500 gal grow out tub. All plumbed together.

My frag tank is 50g low boy, 50% refuge, 50% frags and is part of my 180g display +50g sump with a total of 280g.

As I prune my sticks, they go the frag portion until they are big enough to refrag, or are put back in the DT in another spot.

As part of the system, it requires virtually no maintenance.

My frag tank basically started out as a refugium/ extra volume. I couldn’t grow algae really and I eventually had an abundance of coral that needed space,
So I bought a reef light and the rest is history. My Tanks costs about 150-200 a month to operate, so frags keep that covered and maybe save enough to provide funds for an upgrade or 2 to the systems once a year.

The funny thing about fragging corals is it became another hobby in itself, I get a lot of enjoyment meeting and talking to local reefers and some even have become friends over time. Getting connected into your local reef scene is where it’s at.
