Help with Acan/Micro Lord types?

So I've been looking into starting an Acan/Micromusa lord garden in my 10 gallon but something's been bugging me and I haven't seen it addressed anywhere.

I really like the fluffy meaty doughnut type seen here.

But the ones that look like this fills me with disgust and loathing.

Reminds me of goblet cells from biopsy.

Are they 2 distinct subspecies? From 2 different regions perhaps? Or can 1 turn into the other under certain conditions.
Incidentally I bought 2 Acans from a live sale. Are they gonna grow up to be round, fluffy boys or the eye cancer type.

Sure thing, mine are still small, but they definitely looked like the ones you disliked after dipping them.

I had the large orange one delivered site unseen, friend traded for dry rock I had. I thought it was going to look like what your talking about, until it got happy a few days later.



If there is more to it, I really hope someone comes in a “science it up” for you. I can only tell you about my experience with them. Like I said I am not expert.

I think flow definitely plays a part but there is a lot of variance from piece to piece. I had a Japanese where the heads grew very close together, lots of heads, but tight together. All others were more of that fluffy look but one in particular had these jumbo polyps

Those are the same type of acan. A micromussa lord. One is just the colony when it’s ticked or the lights are going down. Mine alternate between fluffy and flat.

Does anyone know if acans are sensitive to large amounts of trace elements? So I might have screwed up..I use aquavitro salinity as my reef salt not realizing it has trace elements. So the next day I dosed more trace elements..sea Chem TRACE. The next day this acan died almost over night and the others looked really ticked off..my mag has been high too at 1600. Calcium 460 alkalinity 8.6 PH 8.3 and nitrates at a high 20ppm phosphate at .3 but its always at .3 no matter what I do. So phosphate shouldn't have caused this. This acan frag has been doing well for 4 months.
