I have a tremendously healthy and fat 5" Gem Tang...he/she is a wonderful eater and when you see the profile of this beauty, it's just fatness. For some reason, the spots/gems are hardly bright...they are certainly there, but low wattage...what gives? Does anybody know the secret to getting those spots like a night sky in Wyoming?

A pic under white light may be helpful.

Never seen a gem like this. I can see the spots on his/her tail but not really on the body.

Here is my girl. She’s about the same size as yours maybe a bit bigger.

I was thinking it looks like some erosion around the eyes and down the front of its face. Could be beginning of hlle or scars from hlle. Not sure white light pics may give people a better idea of possible issues with this fish. May lead to answers on the no spots issue also. I agree with @Goaway eyes look cloudy also. While overall body condition looks healthy something looks off.

Thank you all for your responses and concern. Means a lot to have a community like this. I believe the picture does not portray the Gem in a good light...when I view him/her up close, there is no cloudiness to it's eyes at all. It eats like a greedy fish, which we want, and has no other issues with the exterior or concerning lines, etc. I'll take some pics with a flashlight shortly and post them. Maybe it will show the Gem's body better.

I really don’t see anything in those pics, just to blue and maybe blurry, at least on my end.

Maybe a few spots, but with no other symptoms, could be anything.

I fish that eats well is a strong contender.

I’ve had spots come and go and not return.
