Our niece’s youngest two boys stayed overnight with us. It turns out one of them threw fruit snacks in there. They remind me of gummy bears due to their shape. The dye has mostly worn off as can be seen in this picture.

The sugar part doesn’t worry me as much as the dyes used to color them. The water is as clear as a bell so no big bacterial bloom as of yet. Everyone’s swimming normally and even the feather duster, as can be seen, has its crown out and looks totally unfazed.

Soooo should I be worried or is everything ok now that the fruit snacks are out of the DT? There weren’t any fruit snacks in the sump so that’s good.

I know I’m not the only one this has happened to. I think that, since this was caught before the fruit snacks could altogether dissolve, everything should be ok. I just want to make sure there aren’t any issues I’m missing. Thank you.

Sugar is actually a carbon source and feeds bacteria.. you could see a slight bloom but a skimmer will help you out.. I don’t think anything terrible is gonna happen.. you could change some water if you wanted 10-20%

given the times that people do find stuff like this, it makes me wonder how many mystery blooms and spikes posted about are due to foreign substances added that the hobbyist doesn't catch being added. :thinking-face:

Everything seems to be doing well so I think I’m finally out of the woods thankfully.

I’m fortunate that it was caught in time. If it hadn’t been caught and we went out and came back late I shudder to think about the bacterial bloom I’d have had. The whole system would have been a giant anoxic zone had those completely dissolved.

No way it won’t harm at all we did sugar doses bigger than that
In a system with 120 gallons and all at once? Plus my biggest concern was the coloring from the fruit snacks since it was caught as quickly as it was.
