Hi all,

Been lingering a little while researching to get my tank up and running but thought it time to finally start a thread!

This is a bit of an intro and build thread in one...

10 years ago (when I was 15) I was 'nibbled' by the marine bug and started getting things rolling on a tank. This was back when DSBs & metal halides were still a thing... I got most of the equipment but stalled when it got to the expensive stuff (It was a bit difficult to motivate to dad:grinning-face-with-sweat:). I'm more grown-up now and have seen with my own eyes how truly expensive things are but pushed through and started my cycle +-3 weeks ago!

*I'm based in South Africa so some equipment etc isn't readily available.
Some info:
Tank - 1200L x 600W x 450H (mm) = +-325l
Sump - +-150l (cant remember the exact dimensions)
3000l/h return pump
TS2 Reeftek skimmer (if I remember correctly, this is undersized so I'm expecting an upgrade - Reeftek also seems to have fallen off from 10 years ago!?)
2x wavemakers, one is variable flow/pulses (still need to sort out flow as I've got a nice patch of bare bottom glass on the one side)
2x 500W heaters (cant remember the make but I've already blown a 200 & 300W which I was running together in the hopes they would be enough - they weren't)
Zetlight Q Maven II Q-120 (seems to be the best 'entry level' mixed reef light available - mixed reef is the plan...)
Close to 30kg's of dry rock?
Caribsea special grade sand
Tropic marin salt
Home-made RODI water

I'm doing a fishless cycle and used Aquavitro Seed and Tropic Marin Nitribiotic (accidentally bought both but think they do the same thing!?) as well as some Ammonium Chloride to kick start things.
As of earlier today my Ammonia levels read 0 (using API which I now see can be unreliable) but Nitrite still high with +'ve readings of Nitrate (using Salifert for both). Salinity was a bit higher at just below 40ppt but I figure I'll get this right with my first water change once my cycle is complete (what % water change is generally needed after cycle?)

High up on the to-do list is cupboards/closing the sump and remaking the top wooden rim (current one is too bulky for my light mounting). As well as cleaning up cables.

Onto some questions:
- A major issue currently is evaporation. I probably need to invest in an ATO (recommendations on brand/type?) I manually top up at the moment which probably isn't good for temp or salinity stability. I was going to do a netting as a cover but have though about perspex to help mitigate evaporation any tips or comments on this? Must I then drill holes in the perspex (I've seen others do this and I'm unsure why other than possibly reflecting too much of the light??)
- Temperature, l have a thermostat which I've set to 26 deg C +- 0.3 deg. Can I widen this range and if so, how much?
- I'm leaving for a 10 day trip at the end of August and don't think its the best idea to add livestock before then (thinking of starting with a couple of clowns). If I leave my tank should I dose more ammonium chloride to 'feed' the established bacteria (or arrange for someone to regularly add ammonium chloride) or will they be happy dormant?
- I have a bag of Aquaforest Life bio Fil in the chamber of my sump which was going to be for a DSB... I'm not sure what to do with this chamber anymore and Chaeto is hard to come by here - any recommendations? I do have a bit of sand left over which I was thinking about adding to it?
- W.r.t additional filtration, I plan on adding a filter sock are there other essentials I'm missing? (I've come across UV filters etc)

I'm open to any constructive criticism on my current set-up. I tend to be an overthinker but decided to get things going before I sit around for another 10 years without actually getting water in my tank. I hope I haven't missed any fundamentals!!

Cheers,
Rockpool

Welcome to R2R!

It sounds like you've put a lot of thought into things. That's great!

I've been using the older tunze osmolator and it has been very dependable.

The open/mesh tops are great for gas exchange but people do still run with glass tops. That'll help with the evaporation. :)

I use a similar Tunze Osmolator, which works amazing for my tank!

Thanks for the Welcomes!

As far as I've seen at both my LFS and not so local, there arent any Tuze products. The best looking ato seems to be the Auto Aqua Smart ATO Duo. Anyone have experience with these?

So ammonia levels still 0 (haven't dosed any more). Nitrites still high and not sure how long it will take for them to drop... I do have Nitrates which means I do have nitrifying bacteria - do they just a while to convert everything?

Lights in - only turned them on for the pic! Also changed the wood around the top to accommodate the lights. Its thinner and I think this looks a lot more clean! Procrastinating cable clean up and bottom cupboards...

With what seems to be a large sump (compared to others), I've moved my return into the second chamber and heaters into the first. Planning on using the third as a reservoir for ato. Happy to be advised against this if it won't work for some reason!?

Moved my sand back where wavemakers had been digging holes and repositioned wavemakers
Pretty sure a heater was shorting and was getting shocked with my hand in the water. Checked all cables, unplugged and plugged back in and all seems OK now - glad to be getting these problems out the way now rather than later but does get me a bit nervous for something going wrong in the future!

Cheating with water tests and just did nitrite today - still reading high... Gives me some more time to read up on how to keep fish alive:dizzy-face::face-with-tears-of-joy:

Just back from a week in Botswana.

ATO worked well while I was away and everything seems in order...

Added ammonium Chloride last night but forgot to test after it had mixed - previously the same amount went to 2ppm and this afternoon I'm testing 0ppm.
Still testing 2ppm nitrite but nitrates are at about 50 mg/l https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/the-importance-of-nitrite-measurements-in-a-reef-aquarium.754714/ has some interesting reading about nitrites - seems one can add fish with some nitrites present?
Going to look at ordering 2 clowns and maybe some CUC. Crrently making some RODI water for a big change and will keep testing as I go...

Still lots to sort out:
- Filter sock/s
- Silencing my overflow (at the intake it sucks air - open to suggestions?)
- Netting for the top
- Cupboards
- Sorting out my sand still getting blown out of place
- QT tank (I'm afraid to ask for input here...) will have a look for some threads on the forum

Past the 2 month mark and time for an update -

As much as I'm ashamed to talk about my losses (already) I figure it may help someone else new to the hobby!

I added 2 clowns and some snails about 2 weeks ago. 1 clown unfortunately got sucked through the overflow and I was sheepishly back at the petshop the next chance I got to replace it...
Got myself a black ocellaris which picked up something (posted on the disease section) and wasn't able to save it. Turns out all the black clowns at my LSF passed away (the rest held in the same 'system' seem to have been fine!?)

I'm yet to get "three-mo" due to limited stock but have added two 6-spot gobies to help turn over the algae on my sand (pic attached) .
Also added 2 of the cheapest Corals I could get my hands on to test the water (both figuratively and literally). I'm keeping them on a make-shift rack before putting them on their own rocks (I believe zoas and some or other mushroom which I don't want taking over the rest of my aqua scape) Finally, also added a cleaner shrimp!

Time for an update -
Corals are doing well and on their own rocks now. Bee testing parameters and all seem fine except low alk… I’m not sure if I’m messing something up on the test cause it’s stable but sits just below 5. Will test a fresh batch of SW and see where that comes in!?
Have added some conchs to try remedy the algae I had on my sand (figure part of the ugly phase and don’t want to chemically dose something. I’d rather get rid of it ‘naturally’ or with time) I’ve also increased flow and it seems to be getting better. Also added banana wrasse (?), sand sifting star, some anthias, a Midas blend, and a fire goby. All are doing well! Need to add more colour to the tank as most inhabitants are orange

Trying to get stable parameters so I can truly start on coral!
