Noticed my gold wall hammer that I’ve had for almost 3 years had a section that hasn’t fully opened in about 2 weeks. Today taking pics notice it’s receding in a spot and looks bad

I picked it up and a long bristleworm came out of the spot that was receding.

Taking the colony out of the water the worm went back in

Performed 20 min dip in coral revive. After 10 min the bristle worm came out along with two small baby ones. Left in revive basting for 10 more min

Assessed situation. 25% of colony is dying. This is really one giant U shaped wall hammer that came in rough shape when I first got it, I saved it and it turns into two hall hammers with a dead skeleton connecting them. Had it for 3 years like this.

One side is completely ok. Healthy flesh band. No issues opening. Other side is half damaged/dying.

Plan: separate into two individual wall hammers

Chisel bad section off of the damaged side
Cauterize the raw side of the part I’m attempting to save with superglue

Performed above steps.

Separating - success
Chisel off bad section - disaster. Did not cut clean. Cracked wall of good side. Frig

Ok. Breathe. Dispose of bad side.
Superglue crack. Cauterize exposed side. Dip in bucket of clean sw 10 min

Return to tank

Upon returning to the tank I killed the lights. Figuring let the coral pull in for the night to reduce stress.

And now we wait and see what happens

Decided to take a look after 3 hours. The good half is fully open, the new frag went through a much more stressful process by being cut in half, but so far it seems healthy.

So far, great success!

Whoever said you can’t frag a wall hammer ? :)
Funny, I’ve heard that many times and have avoided wall hammers because of it . Congratulations on your success!

The frag died suddenly. I do not think it was from fragging process. I have some type of infection in this hammer colony. The second colony which was good, is now showing the same signs and not opening fully. The fleshband is not receding but has a brownish color to it. I may try a Lugols dip or other dip to attempt to save it

The pics of the frag dying are from Wednesday. This happened suddenly, and I decided to remove and trash the frag. The second colony in the background was still opening fully at this time.

Now second colony is opening partial and if you look at flesh band area you can see brownish tint. I can get better pictures after lights are on more today

Looks like BJD on the frag. Keep an eye on the other one.
Frag was disposed of on Wednesday. Now main colony is partial opening and has brownish color on the outer skeleton. Need to find way to save it if possible

I’ve tried everything with Euphyllia. Cipro, amoxicillin, iodine, peroxide. Successfully saved them maybe 1 out of 10 times. Now I don’t bother. Just toss. Too much work for so little success.

Some people have had success with Cipro. Or search for KFC bath which is a combo of all the things I mentioned above and then some. But again, a lot of work and hit/miss success.

What is best way to counter bjd in early stages? I have Revive and coral rx

My Lugols bottle is empty :(
Buy regular iodine (actually betadine- povidone iodine) from the grocery store/drug store. It's cheaper than Lugol's and works just as well...

I examined the coral and did revive dip and decided to call it a loss. It’s detaching from skeleton, I could see under the flesh to the insides. Maybe it could recover but I think the chances are extremely low and I’m not letting this melt and get blown all around the tank

Sad…I had this for many years. No idea what happened :(
