You can. Its quicker and cleaner than using decaying matter. If you don't want to buy some ammonium chloride (meant for cycling), then fish food is fine. Usually that stuff is pretty potent but its always good to make sure the bottle wasn't a dud

I used Turbostart 900 and added a couple of clown fish a couple of days later. Started to feed them and no issues. Honestly back then I just did what the LFS said to do and everything seemed to work out.
