Hi,
I recently started my first saltwater tank and had a few questions. My tank is 100 gallons (IM EXT 100 - 48" x 24" x 20") and currently just has 2 clowns and a few CUC. I wanted to add a few tangs and was wondering if it would be possible to add a blue hippo and a yellow tang, they are around 3 inches at my LFS, and I am ok with rehoming them a few years from now (or I might upgrade my tank). I also read that tomini tangs are also good and are smaller, should I switch the yellow out for a tomini tang? Also do you guys have recommendations for other fish I should look at. How many fish can I have in this tank?

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

I would ditch the regal until you have a bigger tank, they’re nothing but issues in 4 foot tanks IME.
The only tang you could house long term in that tank size would be the Tomini and you’d want to have a nice open rock scape along with as many caves as possible.

I had a Yellow Tang in my 90 and it worked out well. But I'd say no to the Hippo. But I'm not one to temporarily put anything in my tank that won't be there for a very long time. As stated, a Tomini would be a great addition.

Also, the amount of tangs you can have in a tank depends what other fish you want, if you’re like me with almost 30 (small) fish in a 5’ tank, you won’t throw a tang in but if you only want 5 fish total in a 5’ tank you’d get away with most species of tang.

I always view it as a tang wil eventually take up more room than 3-4 smaller species of fish will. Thats how I work with tangs and tanks. Now, I am also one who doesn’t own tangs as all of them become mass murderers eventually (especially Zebrasoma and Ctenochaetus species)

Yeah that makes a lot of sense, I might get 1 tang. I honestly have no idea what to put in my tank now, I just have 2 small clowns. So far, the fish I have come up with are
  • Six Line wrasse
  • Royal Gramma Basslet
  • Firefish
  • probably a Longnose hawkfish
I want to try my hand at Copperband butterflyfish but that will happen later. Any ideas on what other fish I should look would be appreciated!

In this size I would stick with a bristletooth tang only, not a fan of tangs in less than a six foot cause mine use the whole length of my 8 foot tank most of the time. They love to swim

I’d drop the Six Line, they’re aggressive especially towards peaceful fish.
Love to poke the eyes out of other fish, especially dragonets.

There’s quite a few wrasses to look at,
Here’s some of my species I have/plan for. This doesn’t even touch the sides of what I’ve cared for and had.
Green = Currently in my 5’ system
Yellow = sat at the LFS and QTing
Red = unobtained for now
