Finally getting into corals!....

Hey guys, i’m finally getting into corals! I’ve got some credit from the LFS aswell (about 275$ ) and i wanted to get into reefing anyways. I currently have 4 BTA’s and 4 clowns, 1 blue tang, 1 six line wrasse, 1 coral beauty, green damsel, fox face rabbit fish and a “rock dweller” i think haha. I really like the look of Long Tentacle plate corals, Zoas, frogspawn, hammer coral etc. All parameters are checked and double checked to be excellent. It’s a 450 liter tank and i came here to ask if you guys have any useful info or coral suggestions that you would like to tell me! Thanks again

You may or may not know but I’d like to offer one thing that I didn’t know until I wish I had... that is that corals sting each other and will fight to the death. Some corals release poisons. Not all anemones are compatible. Placement is key. Probably the biggest suggestion, from experience, is don’t buy that coral. lol ;D

Not all anemones are compatible. Placement is key. Probably the biggest suggestion, from experience, is don’t buy that coral. lol ;D

Haha ok thanks, so don’t buy the long tentacle plate coral, but are Zoas okay? From the guy in the LFS and online they seem to be (obviously toxic) but fairly non aggresive and okay to keep?

No I’d buy it, anemones I don’t believe release toxins. They do have a strong sting and if they’re uncomfortable, similar to mushrooms, they will pop off their spot and find a new location they prefer. Which may happen to come at the cost of other things oof ;Blackeye I removed a nem I put in my 125 to my 13.5 out of fear but some people play it risky!! Looks great too! Zoas are totally good too. If you slice them up, they will release palytoxins, which can kill you lol but I wouldn’t be worried I’ve killed zoas in my tank, ticked them off and been 100% okay. My corals and fish too. I believe they only do that when they are sliced or stung by another coral. I had a tube anemone sting one of my zoas and it shriveled up for a week or so and I’m pretty sure it may have released some toxic wacky into my water but I’m not too sure. Anyhow I was fine fish were fine, all is good. Plate corals are also fun and pretty. Some types of wrasse will pester them till death though. I have a button scoly in my tank, and they turn it upside down probably once every 10 min when I’m not looking.

Depending on how long it’s been set up and how stable it is I would start with some zoas. If they do well after first few weeks then go for a frogspawn or hammer.
The plate corals usually prefer a more mature system in my experience but I’ve also had good luck with them. Mushrooms are fun too, and pretty easy to keep. Leathers like toad stools are pretty hardy too, and Kenya trees. Even some gsp just keep it on its own rock. If your near Los Angeles I have some gsp and maybe a few other things you can have and try out.


to be honest - things grew but never thrived until about the 1 year mark for me. I started with softies then lps and just getting into sps.

Wow! Really nice corals there, so much colour. Thanks for the advice too
