I added a young snowflake eel back around the beginning of the year, it was pretty small so I was feeding it cut up pieces of scallop. That worked fine but as it grew and began needing more I started feeding it frozen silversides.
In doing so I noticed when I feed the eel the foam on my skimmer goes to nill, I mean totally kills it. I'm pretty sure I understand what's happening, that the fish oils from the silversides are keeping the surface tension of the water from forming adequate bubbles to foam up.
If anyone else experiences this I'd love to hear how, if at all, the issue is approached. Should I leave the skimmer off for a few hours during feeding or just not bother doing anything. It takes a good day for it to get back towards normal.
Thanks, happy Reefing!
