when dosing Ca to get back to normal level of 450 ppm, do you have to dose Alk along with it if it is ok? Will the Ca dose bring down the alk level? It seems like it does this in my system.

I just dose what I need only and then if I need to compensate I do. Let us know how it goes.

Using the dr randy holmes-farley diy two part what I do is first get calc, alk, magnesium to the values I want.

then when alk drops down I dose equal amounts of calcium and alk.

Check that system out.

There is somewhat of an inverse relationship between calcium and alk. As alkalinity increases, it becomes more difficult to raise calcium levels and when calcium levels increase, raising alk levels becomes more difficult. You should also be checking you Magnesium level to ensure that it is within an acceptable range so that your Calcium & alk will remain more stable.
