Do you have a tunze care magnet and have stubborn yellow/green film algae that it just will not touch? Here’s the solution…

So I’ve been battling this crazy nuclear Godzilla algae for almost a year now. Just shortly after I started dosing ammonium chloride (probably not related…but just maybe). A dozen replacement metal flipper blades, a brand new tunze care strong plus as everyone gave it glowing recommendations, a dozen replacement metal tunze blades, and having to manually and quite forcibly scrape from inside the tank (like a paint scraper, not using the exterior magnet). Freakin ridiculous. I had heard about @4daquatics ceramic blade upgrade for the tunze a long time ago but was hesitant as I figured I would dig into the seams on accident with my vision. @Sisterlimonpot (thanks again!) just recently helped me out verifying my salinity as my apex happened to be trending down, my Milwaukee digital trending up, and not being able trust my talking scale when making Randy’s salinity standard. He noticed a bunch of spots where I missed this Godzilla algae and recommended the ceramic blade conversion for the tunze….Life changer! Like a hot knife through butter. No more pretending that I’m an eighties dj scratching records, feverishly moving the scraper back a forth. No more muscle cramps from scraping with all my might while cutting off circulation to my arms dangling over the rim to the bottom of the tank. I know I most likely scratched my glass with all the effort I was putting into removing this algae. These blades are phenomenal! Seriously. If you run into this stubborn algae, don’t waste your time, just order this conversion. You’ll be just as amazed as I! I just should have bought this a long time ago when @reefbeef talked about it. Worth every penny!

Thanks for this. I love the tunze care magnets because I've yet to scratch a tank with one. I have been hand scraping the stubborn stuff but I've been doing that with any magnet scraper. I have 3 of the tunze scrapers so will definatly be trying these out.

Oh man, I can’t tell you how amazed I was on the first scrape. If you’ve been hand scraping (in the tank without the outer), you will be shocked how effortless it is to remove with these blades in the normal operating position (using the magnet on the outside). I thought everyone that recommended the tunze magnet was nuts. It just didn’t work well for me, but my trusty flipper wouldn’t touch this stuff either. I don’t know what this algae is, but it is a major pita.

I have a few points to make here..
1st and most importantly, @Sisterlimonpot is the man!! Very knowledgeable, technical, experienced and helpful- doing for the good of the community. He has personally sent out if his way to help me out, not wanting a dime. Simply suggesting i pay it forward. I am a forever fan of Jimmy!!
2nd, I will try this ceramic blade. The scape is nice but struggles sometimes(I don't always clean my glass enough) and I feel like I'm damaging the glass. Ceramic sounds like it's more gentle on glass. Is it?
Finally,
crazy nuclear Godzilla algae
With a name like this and the "right" marketing, it could be the next hot frag;-)

1 agreed 100%

2 yeah, the tunze worked ok on normal algae/corraline. I actually preferred my flipper to be honest though but might be more tactile orientation. Being vision limited, a rectangle is pretty easy to operate and navigate by feel alone. The oddly shaped styrofoam (1980s computer mouse) is more difficult as I have a hard time gauging how squared up the blade is in relation to travel. As far as I can tell by feel and sound, the ceramic blades glide along the same as the standard single metal/single plastic the tunze came with. I could hear and feel the standard tunze metal blade just riding over the algae in question. Even when going back and forth like a madman. The ceramic just cuts right through in a single pass. Going back over the same area a second time, I just feel it gliding along smoothly and quietly with no sign of remaining algae. I don’t know if it’s any gentler on the glass or not. I do know that they are sharp, they are knife blades, but have rounded corners which is what really makes a difference. The blades come with safety caps for when not in use. Replacement blades, which I purchased not knowing how long they blades will last, come in a protective case. You have to remove the end cap to slide the blades out. I’m being extra careful when handling as to not slice my sausage fingers. Jimmy walked me through everything, which was a major help as I couldn’t figure out how to open the blades on my own. Pretty sure he didn’t want me losing a digit either.

Order placed. I'll report back. From your description I was able to imagine the feel of the blade scraping. It has a sharpened edge which is what all of the stainless blades lack. They just have the 90 degree edge of the thin blade
Totally post back what you think after you try them out. I have no doubt you’ll like them.

Thanks for the glowing reviews. It's much appreciated.

….Life changer! Like a hot knife through butter.

There were a lot of differing versions to get the optimum contact angle to plow through even the thickest coralline. It took close to a year of iterating and collaboration with the community to get a scraper that works well in many applications.

Of course, all that means nothing if you don't have a blade that is truly flat to the surface. It took a lot of hair pulling to get those edges to an acceptable tolerance as well. We are quite pleased with the end result.

I’m not one to offer unsolicited opinions on things. However, when I’m having an issue that is creating a great magnitude of difficulty for me, where nothing (even things that were widely recommended) is helping, and something comes along that truly eliminates that difficulty….its worth going back to a few old posts and updating them with my opinion. Your obsession to detail really shows. Little things like the snap on blade edge protectors for when not in use for example. I’m completely satisfied with this product. A hand wand version or retrofit for the continuum aquatics wands would be cool for overflow boxes and tight areas where a mag float does not work.

Wow ordered Friday and arrived Monday. It cuts right through the green algae that I would normally have to use a hand held scraper to get off.

I think you have that same toxic avenger algae I have been battling with for months. I’ve never had this stuff before and I’ve been in the hobby since the mid nineties. I was totally blown away by this upgrade and I’m not one to boast about products.

I wanna see it melt through thick Coraline
Normal, purple coralline is nothing compared to this yellow/green stuff! Well, at least in my experience. I have no clue what exactly this is, or what I’m doing wrong to cause it to flourish, but it is a major pita

I've never had coraline on the glass except the back which I never clean. I probably clean my glass to often for it to grow but if I don't the tanks looks terrible after a few days because of the film algae I get on the glass.

Gutted that you don’t ship to the UK

So to show how dense and slow I am…. I’ve never liked the tunze outer handle with styrofoam grip. Especially with my sight and not being able to know if the scraper is straight or at an angle. Also the felt and plastic clips would leave streaks that everyone but me noticed. I always loved the flipper as it was rectangular with recesses for my fingers and I could easily tell the direction and angle of the scraper and just how close I was to the edges as the handle is pretty much the same size and shape as the scraper. Plus the felt is steak free mostly. I was today years old when I figured I could use the flipper max outer with the tunze inner! Sometimes I feel really stupid! This is the absolute best scraper for me now! Tunze inner with 4d ceramic blades, flipper handle….awesome sauce! Now I just wish the 4d blade holder could be tweaked ever so slightly with a depth stop of sorts so that I could get closer to the seam without accidentally going into it. Not necessary if you can see what you’re doing of course. I think I chipped the first set of blades but that was totally my fault as I was flipping from pane to pane out of habit. Don’t do that.
